We are all asking the same things but the best anwser is to find some good tactical book and put much time and effort in it. For recognizing tactical patterns, or improve anything in your chess playing you have to work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work, work. There are plenty good books on the topic!
Originally posted by ih8sensAside from what tactical mistakes a master makes or not, while analysing master games you should be constantly asking yourself "why did he play that and not this?". Hence, avoiding certain moves will be based on tactics of varying levels and this will be good practice.
Anybody just study masters games? It seems like a good idea, but then again, masters don't make all that many mistakes that can be punished with tactics.
Naturally the ideal answer is to study tactics explicitly, and as part of master games.

1001 problems? 2 days if you're me, months if you're rahim. 🙂
Anyone, these puzzles are really something else. I have not seen another puzzle collection better then the 1001. Some of them are pretty hard and very deep.
I've been through some of the CTS problems, 150 or so as a guest and I can tell you this problems, 1001 are rated around 1600 and up on average.
Thus, I dare you, I double dare you to do all the 1001 problems say, 2 weeks (Being Generous here). Dare ^ 100 ?
I think what takes longer with these puzzles mostly is getting the solution and some different variations from fritz and saving it.

Starting out - chess tactics & checkmates by Chris Ward (0-1600)
Winning chess tactics - Yasser Seirawan (0-1800)
I have both & they fully explain tactics without resorting to too many brain-busting exercises.
🙂
To be perfectly honest I failed miserably at most of those. I think for a player like me, pattern recognition is half the battle - knowing that in a similar position a tactic may exist.
The examples during each chapter were very well organised - these thematics were of much more use.
The most interesting part for me were the annotated games of the great players though.
Frank Marshall - what a dude!

yah .. some good puzzles there.. i find tactical puzzles are often too easy, because the positions are often fake... mate puzzles where the king is already completely trapped and the trick is finding a combo that gives check (and therefore mate) .. what i really like is puzzles taken from real games...
anyways, thanks for the tips guys.

Now if you had done the tactics "slowly" wouldn't you have been better off? Learning 2 skills at onces, instead of 2 seperately, Pattern Recognition and calculation.
Heheh, so I've been reading through some of your posts and I gotta wonder, don't you have a day job?
I mean man!!! You got,
1.CTS
2.CT-Art 3.0
3.PTS
4.Endgame
5.Kasps. KID games
6.Rhp games
7.Fics 30 30 games
I don't know about this. Sounds very familiar and I wouldn't be suprised if someone goes for an extended break in the near future.

but yea, I have way too many projects going on, and I'm aware of the danger of burning out. still, CC seems to be the thing that takes most of the energy, not so much the other stuff. if I just could get my gameload down to 15 or less, I think all would be good. but now I have 46 games going...

First time I remember you mentioning it.
I might have been getting confused with CTS maybe.
My fault.
So you mean you do work? Hehe.
