Who else here gets quite annoyed when black plays this opening - I find it is quite irritating now, even though something often hapens during the game, a draw seems to invariably be the end result.
Are there any more aggressive options then 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3. d4
or is that about as good a game as white gets?

Whenever I see it in the super GM tournaments they like playing 1.e4 e5 2.Nf6 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 but I think those are positions you have to be a grand master to really understand how to make any sort of advantage for white.

are you kidding?
Petroff's has the most notoriously drawish reputation in all of major chess openings.
here's probably the most realistic line:
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nf6
1/2-1/2

It is a shame they dont like computers being used here, I vaguely remember hydra coming up with some quite creative new ideas in the petroff against michael adams but I cant referance those games.

My first draw ever was with the Petrov against a much higher rated player. I am quite happy with a drawish game if I know my winning chances are close to 0.

Originally posted by TyrannosauruschexYes, you need to be a GM to play 2.Nf6. 😉

I have been searching for games. Found something by topalov which might be intresting to try out one day.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Nc3
*Edit* Just tried this out in a blitz game, by pure chance my opponant played the petroff. I felt the position was ok for white, not as good as I would have liked but more active then normal.
Whenever I get stuck for ideas, I look at topalovs games - he is great for coming up with attacking ideas in the opening.

In their "An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player (revised edition)", Keene and Levy recommend 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 Nc3.
Originally posted by TyrannosauruschexI don't see why you couldn't play Nc3 earlier like gaychessplayer reccommended.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nc3 you'll probably either face 3. ... Bb4 or eventually transpose into a Four Knights Game.
