I just finished the "Play winning chess" book, by Yasser Seirawan. It was pretty good for my playing level (about 1200-1300).

My only complaint was it was a bit too comprehensive, and I felt like each topic that was covered was only covered by 1 or at best 2 examples, making it a little harder to drive the ideas home with practice.

On the other hand, I really liked the writing style. Very easy to read, very easy to grasp what he's presenting, and the examples presented (while somewhat limited) were very to the point.

I was thinking of picking up the tactics book next, but given that RahminK rated it at 0-2100, I wonder if might be a little challenging for me? I fit in the 0-1300 category, but not in the 1300-2100 category!

His books are to the point and easy to read. If you read the other books then Play winning Chess will make more sense. Weren't there exercises and example to try out to practise those ideas? I'm sure there were.

The tactics book anyone can read. I only rated it 0-2100 because at the end there is a tactics test. 45 puzzles, 15 easy, 15, medium and 15 hard.

The 15 hard are rated around 2100.
15 medium around 1600-2000.

So you should still read the book, very simple and then do your best with the tactics test at the end. Even I had trouble with the advanced puzzles.

Great, thanks, i'll pick it up.

Yes, there were some exercises and tests, but again it felt a little light. But I suppose it's not really a fair comment - this isn't intended to be an exercise book, but to teach the concepts. I'm just saying it was a great book and I wish there were more of it 🙂

After you read all 7, you will be well balanced. Great foundation to start chess with and everything will make perfect sense 🙂

Good luck.
