I prefer the community at ICC. People actually chat and good players are willing to give you a helping hand. On PC, I virtually never get a response in chat. Even a simple reply, like "hi" would improve the situation. After all, what's the point of playing against humans if they feel as warm as robots?

However, in all other areas, PC is at least on par with ICC.

Odd........Playchess's chat never seems to shut up.

As to players giving a helping hand theres free lectures run weekly by masters which anyone can view and also a training room with all the things you need provided.....ie drawing on boards, loading databases etc. Most people on playchess are willing to help if you ask, I often give lessons there and players many many times better than me do the same, spent 3 hours yesterday watching an FM go through a Petrosian game in painful detail 🙂

Playchess's interfact craps over ICC's from a hi ...[text shortened]... d let it run out then make another and so on, if you cant afford the yearly membership status.
Yes, lol. That's how I did it once my subscription expired. Just created a new account every 4 weeks. Got to 1800+ then dumped it and the cycle continued. The downside is that you always have to work your way up and I don't think it is quite a full featured account because I can't play engine matches and do a number of other things.

Anyway, I might actually have a stable account if I buy Shredder. The problem with buying Shredder is that I really don't need it. My other engines are strong enough. Thus, I'm probably going to wait for Fritz 10 which will also have a new interface.

Yes, the general chat is quite active. However, in an actual game, my opponents don't respond.

You should get Shredder 10 instead. It includes everything that Fritz has but has a much stronger engine.

This is my point too. I got used to ICC, and find PC too cold. and impersonal.
Great for hans, but not for joe. ICC has an american feel, and not so corperate. I like the interface. It has a better feel, to me.
I dont need fancy, or super graphics, just need to see the pieces move.
I know enough commands to use it, and have people i can talk too.
There arent strange and complicated rules, and weird hiearcy needed to play a tournament at ICC. I go to the events page, and click on what ever tourney they have.
I never could play a tourney at PC, and i played there for 2 years.
Ill stick to ICC, but might play at PC if it was free

A lot of them tend to have the chat windows turned off in game. Probably best to ask in general if people would like a chess game and a chat at the same time 🙂

Great for Hans, but not for Joe? Looking at the list in playchess about 70% of people logged in right now are American or Canadian. If the feel at ICC is american I pity you because frankly it feels old and a bit crappy.

"There arent strange and complicated rules, and weird hiearcy needed to play a tournament at ICC." ???

Go to an active tournament room on playchess.......is that really hard?

Besides playchess has a G/90 team league run sololy on the server. ICC doesnt offer that chance.

Yes, most likely. However, the result is the same. I don't want a big chat during a game, but a simple "hi" and "good move", etc. type of conversation would be enjoyable.

Umm..you need to have some kind of level, to play the tourneys, like bishop, or something.
I couldnt figure it out. I go to ICC, i find a tourney. The have Lechess, and Correspondence chess, if there is no tourney i can enter, i can ask for one.
Old and crappy, is nice and easy to use.
I pity you fritz. Spreeken de doitch?

eek people on ICC do that? Sounds like yahoo. Grandmouser was sizing ICC up to be the place for real chess.......in OTB chess no one ever says "good move" etc while the game is on. I guess peoples version of "good move" on playchess comes in form of applause and good evaluations, something that can be sent regardless of language barriers etc.

I guess it also depends on the time of the game. No one ever says good move for a 1 min game but after playing a G/120 the other players often seem to want to sit around and talk about the game analyze it in detail and give kudos for good moves/ideas.

You need to have bishop rank to host your own tournament on the other hand you just need pawn rank to join one (ie the rank you start off with). No idea how you couldnt figure that out....... 🙂

Not sure what ICC offers in the way of variants but looking at my playchess list there is Giveaway Chess, Chess 960,Ouk Chatrang, Twin Chess, Eight Pawns, Mirrored Start, Shuffle Chess and Thermatic games. A tournament room for each, not to mention god knows how many normal tournament rooms.

If I want a tournament I just start one.

Old and crappy doesnt mean its easy to use.....You just have a comfort zone and playchess's upgrading and growth is taking you outside that zone.

I couldnt figure it out, because i couldnt click and join.
I dont need to be a pawn, or what ever. I have a rating,(icc) i join a tourney. Most of them let anyone join. Some are for under 1600, some for over. I play IM's FM's WGM's even an occasional slow GM.
I played 1 IM on PC, and got a draw.
There are more Titled players on ICC, that are accessible.
I was even chating with Kamsky right after he drew his last game at the world open. Nakamura loves to chat with "patzers" on ICC. Ive chatted with other known Titled players, i know a few popular chess players, and see them on ICC, a lot
Who do you know on PC? Just wondering.
I played variants on ICC, But find them too distracting to learning "real" chess
If you like PC, fine, good for you. I like ICC, and would recomend it over PC. Mostly because i like "old and crappy"
It has a "real" feel to it. Easy, and fun to use

I played Kamsky on playchess 😛

You dont need a rank to join a tournament on playchess, just a bishop rank to create one.......which is stupidly simple to get 100 games and 1400 rating. Super duper wuper easy to join on going tournaments.

Most players on Playchess have chatted with the chess elite or played them they are human too and are often quite friendly, its not a big deal.

I'll give you an example of the admin difference between Playchess and ICC. In ICC try to put in your profile or talking about in chat that playchess is a great place to play.......the admins will tell you to remove it......in Playchess put in your profile or even yap in general chat about how fantastic ICC is and the admins will do nothing at all.....we could really have this debate on ICC because I would have already of been muted 😛
