Same to you; when Fischer dies the world loses a great chess genius - when you die it's just goodbye to a jerk.

The name Fischer will be respected and revered by chess players long after idiots like you and Trains are dust; and no one will really care what his opinions were about political matters. Last I checked, he didn't kill anybody. So get lost, loser; this thread was posted as a link to an interesting story about Fischer that chessplayers would want to read. Start your own thread called "BOO-HOO! I'm a loser and I Hate Bobby Fischer but Real ChessPlayers Don't! It's Sooooooooooooo Unfair!" Grow up, twit.

I'm no fan of Fischer the man, but Bobby Fischer the chessplayer is a god, and he remains an interesting, albeit often embarrassing subject. His mental illness and arrogance has taken a toll, and I prefer the term Chess 960 for the variant that Bobby calls Fischer Random. I've often taken issue with his more rabid fans, but calling him a "jerk," or claiming that he didn't work to succeed at chess, or hoping for his death are simply beyond the pale of good manners and good sense.
In his prime he was a bit of a geek, but he behaved as a gentleman. Even now, he confronts his accusers with a grace and charm way beyond the norm for someone with such a bizarre understanding of the world, indeed his good manners even extend well beyond that exhibited by legions of so-called normal folks.

Wulebgr: I prefer the term Chess 960 for the variant that Bobby calls Fischer Random.
That's just silly; he invented the game and that's what it's been called for a long time. Screw the PC crap; Alekhine made pro-Nazi statements during the period France was occupied, but we don't call it the "Nf6 Defense". Or do you prefer "Freedom" fries with your burgers?

and alekhines defence could be the "nuremberg defence" - because alekhine's silly knight was only following orders.

PC what? Your term is crap
It's like preferring green to blue, or preferring brunettes to blonds--preferences are often silly
Chess 960 clearly describes the parameters of the variant, as does shuffle; Fischer Random is less descriptive
From the starting position below, the move O-O-O will be possible after some play: it will look silly when executed
Originally posted by flexmoreCreative genius often goes hand in hand with a certain level of madness, Many of the greatest chess geniuses became certifiably barking mad (or extremely eccentric) in their later years. But then there have also been many artists or poets like that (think Van Gogh or Byron). You might not like the person or his politics, but you've got to admire the art. The same goes for Bobby Fischer. Long after the person is gone, his games will continue to exist and be admired and studied, while his politics and personality will remain just a sad little footnote in history.

As far as I'm concerned, that's all that counts.
Originally posted by WulebgrThe only reason people want to change the name of the game is because they don't like Fischer's, admittedly extreme, political worldview. Since that has absolutely nothing to do with the game, it is irrelevent to the name of the game which has been called FischerRandom for years. "Shuffle chess" has different setup rules from FischerRandom; in FRC the King has to go between the two rooks. I believe there are other differences as well, such as in castling. Thus, they are not the same game.

I know perfectly well the rules of FRC; I'm playing some games of it on another site. If you'd like to play a game of FISCHERRANDOM chess, PM me.
