I just heard that the farmer suicides in India reached 1.25 million. The banks have had a hand in this by giving them loans with impossible interest rates and then asking "collection agents" (read goons) to collect the loans.

`-I am not aware of what BTU is an acronym for,as I do believe it is an acronym (but I may be wrong), but I do not thats that how they measure the the "hotness" of a chilli.

BTUs? Really? British Thermal Units? Really?
I think you mean Scoville units.
As I said what most people consider a really hot chilli is usually only about 15-20 btu's
where as the hottest ones are upto (or even more in some cases) 10 times as hot!!

Okay guys, Happy Thanksgiving.
In India, we have McDonalds, Coke, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Christmas and Easter is firmly established (regardless of your religion). On our Independence day, after the regular parade, etc we would watch some Bollywood patriotic movie. But of recent years, we have had to watch "Independence day" starring ...[text shortened]... freedom.
I am sure, Thanksgiving will also be adopted... it's global, pop culture thing.

such matters.

How many BTU's are we talking here?
(A fairly hot Jalepeno chilli is about 15 BTU's (if I remember correctly),which many consider a fairly hot chilli, where some chillis can be 100+ BTU's !! ouch!!)
That part I knew, but, I googled to find you a link (supplied below) and what I just learned is, the Bhut Jolokia Chili is about the same intensity as most government grade pepper sprays!
What that tells me is, not that the Bhut Jolokia is really intense, but that the gov't used pepper spray is WAY more dangerous than I thought. Liquid bhut jolokia in the eyes? That would be enough to take down a dinasour.
Even the quite tame (by wiki standards) serrano pepper is enough to make some people's mouth and lips blister. The Bhut Jolokia is about 65 times hotter! YIKES. It sure seems that it could do damage to the eyes.

Originally posted by shahenshahI do not know if you know that there are two especially hot varieties of Chili, called Lavangi Mirchi and Byadgi Mirchi. Mirchi is the Marathi word for Chili, Mirch being the Hindi word. Both these varieties are small. The pods of Lavangi are about 3 to 4 mm in diameter and 3 to 4 cm in length. Byadgi Mirchi is bigger than Lavangi Mirchi, but not much. These are grown in the western and southern states of India. Best used when it is green, freshly picked from the plant. However, the pods are also used after sun-drying, after which the pods turn red. The red pods lose some of the fiendishly hot flavour but the red colour is a good decoration to the curry. I request all RHP posters to try green chili pickle as a seasoning to any food item. They will never go back to Tabasco or any other sauce.
I thought the degree to which a chilli was hot was the amount of tears, sweat or in my case hiccups produced.
I didn't know the "hotness" of a chill could be measured but it seems it can.
I found the below link....
It seems that the Bhut Jolokia is the hottest.
