May all your expectations be frustrated,
May all your plans be thwarted,
May all your desires be withered into nothingness ,
That you you may experience the powerlessness and poverty
Of a child,
And sing and dance,
In the compassion of God,
Who is Father , Son and Spirit ,

Amen

I know. It's threatening and a stumbling block to many. The compassion of God is an offence to our pride. To be that tender and fragile is not the way of the world.

Ask yourself why you find it noxious....

I'm with Starrman here in his summation. If you are experiencing powerlessness and poverty because everything has gone wrong, then how on earth are you supposed to believe that God is compassionate? It's not a time for singing and dancing. Sounds like the sort of thing written by someone who never actually experienced it an is romanticizing poverty.

Bizarro-God strikes again! It's funny how words like 'compassion' take on a completely opposite meaning when uttered by certain theists.

So, if I read this prayer right, God creates a world full of suffering for us to live in, but we gladly become masochists so that we can experience the 'compassion' of being saved from a situation the 'rescuer' created.

It's like an arsonist who sets a building on fire, then 'saves' only those who call out to him. Obviously, the fire is the fault of the people in the building. They must have done something to anger the arsonist. They should feel lucky the arsonist sticks around to save any of them at all. They should honor and praise the arsonist and throw him a ticker-tape parade once they get out.

Oh he's been there alright. Korean war and then returned to USA. Spent some years as a chronic alcoholic. .....Trust me...he's been there.....probably more so than most. If there is one thing Brennan Manning isn't then it's a romantic idealist stuck up his own ass.

There was a young lady named Bright,
Whose speed was far faster than light.
She went out one day,
In a relative way,
And returned the previous night!

I see, the poem is a call to anarchy.
