Only 2 comments:
1) increase the list for 20 names:
01 - Pelé
02 - Pelé
(...)
09 - Pelé
10 - Pelé
11 - Di Stéfano, etc;
2) remove Maradona and put Garrincha or Fontaine or Sindelar.

I refuse!!!
Far too difficult, and my choices would differ depending on what mood I was in.... but Bestie would always be No 1 in my book.... Pele at 2..... Maradona wouldn't figure in my top 10 ever.
Helder.. I know the dislike for each other that Argentineans and Brazils have for each other.....but Blade that handball goal… that was missed my the linesman and referee you cant still hold that against him.
I mean let’s not forget the penalty that Owen got a few years back against Argentineans 😉

1) Number of scored goals.
Pelé is the... 2nd!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Friedenreich
2) Career.
1956-1977
3) Physical form.
The human heart pulsates +/- 70x/min in rest; in his best form,
Pelé´s heart had 35x/min - He would run 100m in 11s - See this
photo:

4) Violence.
After 1964, the players discovered the only way to stop Pelé; after '66
WC, the world (Brazilians include) decreed: Pelé is finished... heh!
Etc, etc, etc.

If he'd have said after the match, "Yeah I handballed it, and couldn't believe that the ref or linesman didn't see it!" We could half accept that... actually no, thinking again.... I couldn't.
He's a fat little crackhead Argie cheat, and always will be.

AT LAST! A good list! Congrats, boarman (rec'd)!
We need the off list here - players that won't ever be on any list but that were just enjoyable to watch.
1) Chris Waddle - his french years
2) Cantona - his english years
3) Hugo Sanchez - his spanish years
4) Robert Prosinecki - he beat Marseille all by himself in the 1992 final.
5) Fernando Redondo - god bless him
6) Simon Tahamata - his dutch years
7) Van Basten - shame on italian agressors for killing his best years to come
8) Roger Milla - you know why
9) Maldini - piece of history
10) every kid playing in the park or street every day just for the fun of it

What´s the best, Maradona or Pelé?
boarman asked the question, and put more 8 great players.
And I didn´t put names what I saw on a site, but on the TV
(live) or on the field, not on Wikipedia.
Your "obvious list" are the list of great football players of all time.
Your another list are of good football players, but no one of them
are better than Pelé or Maradona.

What the hell is going on with this place! Grow up the lot of you!"
I can see:
1. you don´t know to use "copy and paste" to read an electronic newspapper;
2. you don´t know who is Diego Armando Maradona;
3. you didn´t read the RHP Terms of Service, item 3(c).
Take care.
I guess that this debate can be sorted out with play style... maybe
Pele is the best in its own style while Maradona is on his own.
So let's discuss... what are the differences between them on the
playfield?
Maradona could take on his shoulders a crappy team and lead it to
glory. Pele was much more of a team player, notorious for single
acts of footballing wonder, while Maradona was a genius in much more
elaborated actions.
