He will spend ages telling you that Volleyball is no 1 in the world, way ahead of football. He will go on to say that Dragon boat racing is almost as popular as football and Cricket is only played by 5 people in the world and 4 of them only do it because they have lost their baseball bat.
...[text shortened]... score 1 point with rednight, whereas he will mention Guam and lower umbongo land play Baseball.
Well given the challenge he has up on the Open Invites page I can see how he might be somewhat confused. He might think it's funny of course; I hadn't thought of that possibility.

I would love to see some REAL data to support that statement.

Everything I read has the following listed at the top:

Soccer
Volleyball
Ping pong
Basketball
Tennis
Golf

not always in that order.

The US is parochial. What I've learned on this site is the surprising fact that England is even more parochial. As in most things, you are about 10-20 years behind us.

As for Arnold Palmer. I listed him with some other retired sports figures on a list of the "Most Recognized" sports figures.

That is a true statement. Arnie was the first sports figure to market his likeness globally. He and his agent Mike McCormack of IMG are often credited with inventing the concept. It is why IMG is now the largest sports talent agancy in the world.

I forgot to put Ali on the list and corrected that mistake before you noticed.

There was no intention to rank the players on the list.

To review, I think the list of most recognized was, in no particular order:

Ali
Palmer
Pele
Jordan
Ruth

All good names. It is surprising to me that no tennis players make the list. I can think of a dozen names, but not one that stands so clearl yabove the rest. Maybe one of the old Australians?

In the future, please make your posts more interesting or I shall be forced to follow the lead of the rest of the site and discontinue reading them.

Well you could look at this I suppose.

http://ezinearticles.com/?Most-Popular-Sports-Around-The-World&id=551180

This is calculated using the number of people who play or watch the sport.

I saw a hilarious table trying to suggest volleyball was the most popular sport because it has the most affiliated associations.

Great link but Rednight will hate it. It states that Cricket is second with 3 billion and Basketball and Baseball way down the list witheach getting a sixth of Cricket.

he has continually posted the opposite is true.

I will be interested if he will apologise or hide.

It is not so much that I hate it, just that I question it and it's author.

I mean who is Lydia Quinn and where did she get these numbers?

And, come on, 3 billion people watch cricket? (forget about playing, let's just say watching). That is half of the world's population. I'm not sure that half of the world even knows what cricket is.

I would buy that 3 billion people may have seen a cricket once, chirp, chirp!

Here is another site, equally unreliable, with a different list.

Well, given that India alone can account for nearly a third of the figure it's not so outrageous.

Do you live in a fog? Try and come up with the other two-thirds.

And do you really for one second believe that every man, woman, and child in India is a cricket fan? Every single one? There is not a single person on the entire subcontinent of India who doesn't follow cricket avidly? How many homeless people are there in India? How many Televisions? How many people who live in abject poverty?

You're being absolutely silly.

Let me give you one piece of valuable advice: don't believe every thing you read on the internet

Whatever the exact figures, cricket is widely cited as by far the most popular sport in India, even raising concern in some circles that other sports are suffering as a result.

I am tired of these absurd statements about the popularity of cricket based on some moronic website.

Therefore I have set up my own website that say's that 500 trillion people on the planet jupiter watch and play tiddly-winks every day. Making it the most popular sport in the galaxy.

I said "can" not "did".

Are you still confused about your "Open Invite" or just being difficult. Your link even refutes it's own figures at the end so I'm not sure why you bothered posting it.

I don't give a damn how popular any particular sport is but what is your problem with cricket?

I believe that. I don't know what that means in terms of fans. I do know intuitively that it doesn't mean 1 billion, even discounting for small children and the infirm would lead to a number far less than that.

We've been having this debate for months and there is no definitive data to decide the argument...plenty of puffing and conjecture though.

The International Cricket Council claims that thir sport is "followed" by 2 billion people.

the formula one federation claims that they are the most popular spectator sport in the world with 44 billion television viewers.

I guess that means 6 billion here on earth and another 38 billion on Uranus?

I'm sorry that "can" and "did" are the same for you.

If this debate has been going for some time then I'm probably repeating what someone else has said already.

I agree that there's no excuse for bashing US sports although people going on about how tough your football guys are is always going to be difficult to comprehend for a rugby follower.

In the major US sports, how many of them have an international competition and how many countries apart from the US have even a remote chance of winning them. It's very few countries. That's why people see US sports as completely US centric and therefore not especially popular elsewhere. Those sports may have some clubs and associations in the majority of countries but so do most activities.

Most people have played volleyball on the beach or at a party, I know I have, but I'm not sure that counts.
