A win as black in 9 moves (11 if you count the moves to the starting position).
Perhaps not so bad for black after all!

On balance 3.d4 is the worst possible reply.
I do however advocate 3. ... d5 for black after 3. Nf3! or 2. ... d5 in preference to eXf.

What about 3. g4 Qh4+ 4. Ke2 d5! looking at Bxg4 ?
The reality is they are all bad but the the Kings Gambit tournament people are playing d4 and Ne2. I am not sure if anyone has played g4!

Explanation might help. Basically, after black plays Qh4+ white's got a LOT of catching up to do...g3 fxg3 Nxg3 Bd6 and black's gaining a strong adv. In fact, there may even be a forced mate...I'm going to look it up. Nope.
I think d4 is worse! Just my opinion as both are dreadful but
1. e4 ... e5
2. f4 ... f6
is even worse. Especially after
3. fXe .. fXe
which I have seen black play a number of times (not in this tournament obviously)
Originally posted by Dragon FireIf you can find a single game in any DB that uses 3.Ne2(not including your own games, of course) I'll consider changing my mind. I can find over 70 that use 3.d4.
