a lot of banking ought to just be turned over the government.

with the government then calculating all benefits, all taxes, etc. budgeted, automatic payouts for rent and groceries (managed thru online credit accounts, etc.).

do away with paper money, in the process. mongolia tried to do that (go to electronic money) but don't think they've made it.

Your reality may be very different, I'll grant you.

Nobody labelled them all as scroungers, but anybody who has been on the dole for more than a year is obviously not looking for a job.

Actually, I wonder how many people would take the opportunity if they were given, from Prince Charlie's vast estates, one acre of farming land for that purpose.
I reckon many people could not be bothered.

For one, socialism requires much higher tax rates - meaning that the hard workers subsidize the lifestyles of people who don't want to work. Come down to Texas. You'll be even more impresssed on how much bang for the buck you buy in real estate here.

As in ancient Rome where, after many years of lobbying by the tribunes of the people, the Senate finally gave land to the poorest citizens it was found that most could not be bothered to take up their rural allotments but preferred to exist on free corn doled out in the capital.

That's awfully big of you.

If you think nobody is labelling these people as scroungers, your reality evidently doesn't feature tabloid newspapers.

I think Varg is talking about this thread. He, nor anyone else has referred to scroungers in this discussion.

The tabloids obviously do love to feature stories of scroungers - are you denying they exist?

However, even the tabloids don't say that all benefits claimants are scroungers. Perhaps you are extrapolating what they are saying in your own mind?

But poverty isn't defined by hunger anymore in this country, it seems.

I think you need a DVD player and Sky TV to be considered above the poverty line.

There are apparently about 13 million people living in poverty in the UK, according to oxfam. http://www.oxfamgb.org/ukpp/poverty/thefacts.htm
