The thumb thing would hardly be resorted to in the halls of ‘debate college”, would it. So we are beyond college, beyond juvenile nah nah nah na nah, so why is it here? I still don’t get it. Like, I would walk from my lectern to a chalkboard and put a check mark or an ‘x’ ?

Some of us are. But as for the collective 'we'...

We have loads of college grads and profs here, and professional people of all stripes, and grandpas and grandmas.
But if you had no idea who you were talking to, you could swear you're listening to a bunch of gum popping phone gazing teeny boppers.

Not meaning to sound silly, but I dont get it.
It's a silly feature.
Not understanding its importance means you have the brain power to express yourself with words. Giving any credence to icons showing a numeric approval/disapproval rating is for... how do I put this delicately...

... for blockheads.

And nincompoops. Blockheads and nincompoops.
I take it you republicans are losing the thumbs down game, for folks who think it’s a worthless exercise you spend a lot of time worrying about it.
I personally use it very sparingly and only in cases of a poster being offensive to another poster or posting something that is generally offensive such as a racist comment.
We get censured by other people all the time why not here?

Great summation. And here is this kid saying he uses it 'sparingly'. Wow.

Really? You believe commenting on it is equivalent to worrying about it?
From my POV a worthless excercise would be me trying to convince you otherwise.

For example, I might try to convince you polling data is not entirely reliable for forecasting election results, because some people refuse to answer polling questions. How many I don't know, because I'm not a pollster, so I don't have inside knowledge of the percentage of potential respondents who don't respond... but pollsters ARE in a position to know because they are the ones asking the questions and compiling the data.
The mistake pollsters made four years ago was to assume absence of evidence was evidence of absence. They didn't take into account voters who did not tell them how they were going to vote. By the way, vitriolic hatred towards Republicans didn't discourage Democrats from answering, so...

So I'll leave it up to you to think about it and come to your own conclusions.
