"The Taliban victory follows Biden breaking the peace deal former President Donald Trump negotiated with the jihadist organization. Under Trump’s terms, the U.S. would have withdrawn all of its combat personnel by May 1 of this year in exchange for the Taliban promising not to harbor terrorist groups like al Qaeda, to negotiate in good faith with Kabul, and to refrain ...[text shortened]... d."

Someone had to remove the band aid. This outcome in Afghanistan was a foregone conclusion more than a decade ago. Bush, Obama and Trump knew it would just be a repeat of the Vietnam pullout. None of them had the political courage to actually give up. Trump, with 4 years in office, schedules the US troop withdrawal for a few months after his re-election or the next Presidential takes office. That was smart.

The smart move for Biden, politically, would have been to meet with the Taliban again (just like Trump) and delay the withdrawal until after the next presidential election in May 1 of 2025. This avoids any political fallout and/or passes the buck to the next president.

There was no other outcome than what we just witnessed. The question was when.

Yes. This is bad for the US’s image. I agree.

But on the international stage, after 4 years of trump, there’s not much embarrassment to go around. The US has been a laughing stock since 2016.

the smart move would have been to leave by may 1...as the Trump agreement stipulated.

And that would have changed anything ........ how?

Biden, like Trump, probably listened to military war hawks too much, but at least he didn't drag out this foolish war for over 4 years like Trump did.

That's just BS. Nothing in Trump's surrender agreement had "teeth"; in fact, he got 5000 Taliban soldiers released right in the middle of the most violent year of the occupation.

Obviously other outcomes were possible.
But this one was likely.

But what did you want? To be stuck in Afghanistan bleeding money for 2 extra decades?

How would you have resolved the US involvement?
