About a year ago a brutal rapist were arrested here in Sweden, and DNA
testing showed that he was indeed the guilty man. Noone, not his wife,
his kids, his friends or relatives, no one suspected for a minute that he
was a brutal rapist. Why? Because in all other aspects of being human,
he was very normal.
Tell me, if he could have told people what went through his mind without
being immediately judged as a monster and a freak of nature, don't you
think the odds of him not acting on those thoughts would have been
better? When the rest of us force people like this to carry their dark
secrets inside and not talk about them for fear of being loathed, we are
in fact directly encouraging them to act on their darker fantasies. Why
should a person who can't really find kindness from anyone unless (s)he
hides a big part of who (s)he is even care about the people (s)he's
hurting?
So, yes, I think they should be forgiven after time served, but also, they
should feel like it's ok for them to talk about what they're going through
without being judged and despised by the rest of us. Sometimes, all you
really need is to talk about it and the pressure is off. Sometimes you
need more help, but the bottomline: they should feel that they're not
monsters, but regular folks with problems that can be dealt with if they
can only muster up the courage to ask for help when it gets too hard for
them to handle on their own.

"No Mr. Deviant! That's naughty! You shouldn't be thinking like that". A little too obvious perhaps as, unless he's completely psychotic, he will already know un-ethical and wrong that would be - thus forcing him to feel ousted by the norms of society and loathed for his monstorous fantasies, driving him to give in to the dark urges.
"What a co-incedence, Mr. Deviant! I had exactly the same thought this morning! It's perfectly normal to have deviant urges like that, but make sure you don't act on it." A level of acceptance that's only going to twist them to think that such ideals are actually okay and that he should be hanging around outside schools in a trenchcoat with a pocket full of chloroform.... just as long as no one finds out.

I read an article a year or so ago about paedophiles. Basically, it gave insight to the type of people they are. For example, they hone in on their victim. They will start by gaining the trust of the parents or in most cases mother (as some will tend to go for the single parent family and assume a father role to the child). Once they have the trust of the parent they then start working on the trust of the child. They actually believe they are doing the child a favour by giving that child love and that they are doing nothing wrong. They see it that whilst guys like to have sex with guys, well, they like to have sex with children. They are less likely to show remorse as a result compared to a sex offender.
In terms of rehabilitation there are options but they work on some and don't on others. Some can go 14 years before they re-offend. If they do re-offend it is likely they did so because they haven't had the support from therapists/psychiatrists. It is difficult to target paedophiles coz in many cases authorities don't know who they are until they actually commit the crime and they can come from various backgrounds.

that you know is wrong but can't help doing (doesn't have to be anything
as serious as paedophilia) and you find that I'm not trying to give advice
('cause obviously, unless I'm in the same situation I can't give advice)
but listen without judging, that alone can help you deal with it. You will
have someone to talk to when it gets hard for you.
If it turns out you need a lot of time, I would (again without being
condescending or judgemental) help you get in contact with a good
therapist (if I can). This is what friends do for each other.
Let's face it, the leap between fantasy and reality is huge for most
people. It takes years of holding it inside, being ashamed and searching
for various outlets before you finally crack and let it all out in the worst
possible way. Obviously, for some it's easier hurting others. A
psychopath. for instance, will not have any trouble being who (s)he is,
whereas a "normal" person will go through an immense inner struggle
with issues like this. The first can't really be helped (as I understand it)
but the latter can. Individuals. The keyword is always...

with half a brain. Yes, first win the trust of people who can potentially
stop you, then start working on achieving your goal. And subconcisously
you will find ways to justify your actions to, if no one else, yourself.
I'm talking about stopping this whole process before it begins, or help
someone who's been caught and wants to be free.
In fact, the example you bring up where the paedophile convinces
him/herself that the child really wants it is an excellent example of how
most paedophiles really doesn't want to hurt anyone. But there comes a
time when they can't resist anymore. I'm positive most paedophiles can
be stopped before they cross that line if they could talk openly about it
without fear of being sentenced and stoned by the raving public.
