I assume every for-profit site wants as many people actively using that site for as long as possible. That certainly must be what the advertisers want, and must have something to do with the advertising rates that can be charged.
Web-sites would want to ensure that they appear towards the top of search engine results to maximise new members. I think search engines give extra priority to web-sites that are linked to other web-sites.

I don't know much about web site business but do you think that someone posting a link in a forum would be the same as if RHP officially posted links on it's home page?

I would understand if a correspondence chess site didn't allow links to other correspondence chess sites (although I appreciate very much that this isn't completely forbidden here), but I don't see why other links should be a problem. On the contrary, I believe that the forums would be less attractive if people couldn't post links. Debates would be difficult if you were not allowed to link to sources, for example.

I guess links to sources of material actually posted in a forum wouldn't bother me much but we see some posts that are just links. Nothing else in the post.

Link sources? Actual debates?

No no no, you have it all wrong.

This is a forum for trolls and flame wars from people who need to lash out at other people via the anonimity of the internet.

We have no need to actually post links to our sources when we just want to tell someone how crappy we think they are.

I tend to agree with you but wonder if search engines have a way of monitoring traffic between web-sites without their being actualy links in the web-sites.

For example, do you switch between sites covering RHP, porn and beavers ?

It's ocurred to me that a high proportion of "moderators" may be people who wanted to be such because they are control freaks who jump at the idea of censoring others.

I guess in your mind its alright when someone from the US gets banned and the other poster (who by the way) used worse language than I did gets a free pass. If I'm to banned for using profanity then so be it. I'll do my pennance no problem. It's when the other person who used profanity gets a free pass that ticks me off. It's usually someone who isn't from the US that gets a free ride.
All laws are enforced imperfectly. The fact that I get caught for speeding and someone else doesn't won't give me a leg to stand on, if I was in fact speeding.

If you get caught for speeding and lose your license, you'd want to have at least one leg to stand on.

LOL! I actually seem to spend ALL my time switching between RHP, Caissa and ICC. Oh yeah, and also Amazon.com. Especially Amazon.com.

Go on, I dare you, point!!!

Actually the Holland thing isn't really fair because I imagine 99% of Europeans don't know that Holland isn't a country either (excluding the Dutch of course) though a higher proportion could tell you were Amsterdam is 'cause it's such a trippy place to hang out.

Holland is actually a region of the Netherlands and the Dutch get very upset when people don't know this 🙂
Yeah, very upset ..... 😠

Caissa and ICC (Internet Chess Club) are other sites where I regularly play chess. Clan Caissa on RHP first started with friends from the Caissa site. And ICC is the first internet chess site I subscribed to years ago, and still the best place for live games in my opinion.

Have you had a chance to look at www.itsyourturn.com, assuming you're interested in chess, as well as backgammon, jamble (scrabble), battleships, etc ?

What did you think ?
