I would like to hear some comments on the following verses about eternal life.

First we have the words of Jesus himself as found in Matthew 19:16-22.

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and [thy] mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go [and] sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come [and] follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Ok now approximately 50 years later these words were said by Paul in Romans 10:9.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Now for the sake of argument, let's say that I was the young man Jesus was speaking to in Matthew 19. I didn't really like what he told me because it was too hard. He told me to follow the commandments...even the ones that were unpopular. Now 50 years later I heard a man named Paul who admitted to never knowing Jesus until AFTER his crucifixion. Answering the same question i asked Jesus 50 years earlier, Paul told me Romans 10:9 which was contradicting Jesus and coincidentally much easier to do. Now who am I to beleive? Jesus...which means a huge amount of people only THINK they have eternal life or am I to beleive Paul which essentially calls Jesus a liar? What do I do?

You might also like to read 2 Corinthians 12:16 before answering.

OK, what I would say, and I mean this seriously, is that after 50 years you still have the same problem. You're perfectionistic and worry too much. There was another thread that addressed this very scripture of the rich young ruler. My interpretation is that Jesus was just fed up with the guy. What ever answer he gave it wasn't good enough. He was what I call a "yes, but" person." Jesus simply addressed his core problem which was an attitude of attachments. Attachment to things, wealth, and perfectionism.

kirksey buballa...please keep the comments on the verses and NOT on the fictional Feivel character. Now you really didn't answer much of anything...who do I believe? BTW are you bucking the mainstream christian trend and claiming Jesus was less than perfect?

But wouldn't Jesus be more interested in the person? 🙂 I thought I did answer your question, but perhaps not in the expected way. I am disappointing many a person in the forums of late. To the point, I'd stick with Jesus. OK, your last question. There is a fascinating passage in Matthew 15:22ff. This is a passage where I believe Jesus is not on his good behavior. He is influenced by the culture of his time in a negative view of women. What is your interpretation of this passage? Make it quick as the stones are being gathered.

Not part of the question and off topic.

To the point, I'd stick with Jesus.

Thanks for your answer 🙂

What is your interpretation of this passage?

I have no interpretation of ANY passage in the bible and that was a really great attempt to change the topic 🙂

As in chess I am a step ahead of you 🙂

In your opening post you quote scripture and ask questions that require interpretation.
Now who am I to beleive? Jesus...which means a huge amount of people only THINK they have eternal life or am I to beleive Paul which essentially calls Jesus a liar? What do I do?
But then you reject 'interpretation' out of hand. Sorry Feivel, you won't get much help that way. What do you do? Continue to bury your head in the sand. Any legitimate answer given you would be casting pearls before swine.

The question I asked requires no interpretation. It is answered simply by saying Jesus or Paul. You can't say both since their answers are contradictory. You are using an extremely common christian tactic by trying to twist my words. Sorry Coletti, that is not going to work.

As further evidence of your blindness, you have provided your own interpretation in your opening post. Your agenda is obvious, you are not interested in any intelligent discussion, only Christian bashing. You first tactic is to bate by providing a faulty interpretation. But your true colors have been revealed in this and other threads.

If anyone else is interested in discussing the verses Fievel has posted, I'd be glad to participate. I don't think I'll bother with Feivel any more.

Feivel - any last words of ignorance?

Posting verses then asking a question is an interpretation? I think you better start praying for some brains 🙂

If I misquoted the verses, show me the correct ones. Just answer the question and stop being a really bad example of christian's light. Doesn't the bible tell you to let your light shine before men? I wonder why you like wearing a lampshade?

Read John Chapter 3

3:3 In reply Jesus declared, " I tell you the truth, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again.
3:10 You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, " and do you not understand these things?
3:11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

You can read all of the chapter your selves Feivel all he does is cretize he will do it to me here as well.

The light is accusing me of making an interpretation when all I did was quote verses from the King James version of the new testament? If thats the light I don't want anything to do with it and I would guess that if there were any "searchers" here Coletti's light just scared them away. Bad witness. And you agreeing with him on that is an even worse witness. It also shows the extremely low tactics employed by evangelicals. I amend my post in the other thread where i said you and the other Laodiceans would make Jesus puke. It is far worse than that 🙂

i will try to answer the question in time as ive just read you post and will read your bible passages, But remember paul never met jesus in person, by all acounts and was only converted after the road to damascas. Plus his version of jesus is the one we have today as peter was to attend a council to talk about the versions of jesus being put about . but before they could meet peter was put to death so pauls version stood.

The Devil is blinding the entire world to the truth. He should be fired from his position as the bad guy. The Devil has got the entire world by the short and curlys, and he needs to be stopped. Is there no one out there can help? This evil monster is turning people into Buddhest, and Hindhus, and Jews, and Muslems, and He has also ruined the American Indian by telling him all that crap about mother earth and the like. He is one bad dude, and someone needs to step in and pull his plug.

I only wanted to urther discussion and debate by asking your point of view. I think you may know me well enough that I don't evade questions or try to change the topic to get out of an uncomfortable answer. Why not have an interpretation of any passage in the Bible? My inviting you to have an interpretation is my honoring you by asking your opinion. There are many people on the site who I do not ask their opinions. Yes, of course, you are ahead of me in chess. I still play you though. That's my point. It may not be about the outcome. It's about playing (chess) and the discourse (the debate).

Oh yea, if you don't like my answer, go to RBHill as he seems to have them. 🙂
