No; but it's asking too much to ask any system in a country of 310 million people to be perfect.

Yeah it's frustrating apparently people here think that the 800,000 law enforcement officers in the country should all be Perfect God-Like and Never Wrong in the split second decisions they have to make every day.

Considering the microscopic percentage of abuse of power complaints that come up I'd say they do pretty well.

Why, WHY can't the whiners see that?

We still punish the minority that commit offenses even if they are a minority.

It not happening often isn't an excuse to let it pass.

Nobody is saying otherwise what we're saying is the people that act like Chicken Little and scream "OH GOD America is becoming a police state last week ONE cop did something wrong HOLY MOLY the Police are out of control" are missing the picture.

I agree with you in that I feel the police get too little respect in the US.

i read the other day that the Oakland PD is chronically understaffed. i guess it's hard to find people to sign up for that.

In Oakland they consider Lovelle Mixon a hero. He's the small time thug/multiple child rapist that went on a killing spree and gunned down 5 officers with an AK-47, killing 4 of them.

Read some of the comments on this video, it will make you sick:

It's not unknown for some people to take a romantic view of criminals.

For example, the folk song which portrayed Jesse James as an American Robin Hood and castigated Robert Ford for gunning the outlaw down. Alongside that there are the many shows that romanticize mafia membership.

We have to recognize that sort of romanticism as fiction, though. It shouldn't be guiding our actions.

A dog was chained to a van and two police officers were sent to capture him. At first the dog is running trying to not get caught but then he is caught.
After being caught the dog is "resisting arrest" for some time but in the end he understands that he is subdued.
After that he lays on the ground, moving his tail. And we all know what it means when a ...[text shortened]... gain. All of this was gratuitous and unnecessary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbwSwvUaRqc
I've always wondered how anyone can do the job that police officers do and not go totally insane.

Pretty much from the moment you put that uniform on, you have to be ready in a split second to engage with someone who intends to kill you. Even the most innocent traffic stop or 9-1-1 call can turn into a vicious attack. The most innocuous of situations can suddenly lead to a gun or a knife or choke hold being pulled on you.

So you have to be hyper-vigilant at all times while you are on duty. It is a miracle that the great majority of police don't have severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Presumably there are ways of choosing and training police to minimize this, but it seems extremely unlikely that you can totally prevent it.

As such, unless we want to eliminate police entirely, there will always be a horrible story of police brutality somewhere to tell.

Glamorizing outlaws from the past in romanticized accounts is one thing, glamorizing someone that just gunned down 5 police officers and claiming he's a hero and the pigs deserved to die is quite different.

Your analogy is sort of stupid.

Do you think anyone here at RHP glamorizes Lovelle Mixon or defends the glamorization of Lovelle Mixon?
