His interest is in appearing as 'the great statesman hovering over the fray and negotiating peace.' He won't want to risk a failure, so he'll only do anything if Ukraine is exhausted and ready to surrender their land while Russia is willing to take a temporary pause to re-arm before taking the rest of Ukraine.
Then he will add 'peacemaker' to his legacy - and be long gone when the war re-commences.

That war matters because it is just the first volley in Putin's drive to rebuild the old Soviet Union, as much of it as he can force back together and support for Ukraine is one step to stop that advance.
Trump will just give away 1/3 to 1/2 of Ukraine's sovereign territory for 'peace'.
