I think we should treat our elected politicians like the precious symbols of democracy they are.
Naturally I think the man is a jerk who have done more damage to my perception of America than anything else I can imagine. But we should still protect our democracy.

The point is that if you respect democracy as an institution you respect democratically elected leaders. Attacking them is attacking their voters and the concept of democracy.
It is easy to laugh of the thought that Bush could have been hit by a shoe as a goodbye gift - but unless you would merrily laugh if he had been beaten or shot you should not laugh when witnessing an attack on democracy.
