I say it's time we made it legal so that it can be controlled, taxed and safe.
The woman would be required to maintain a license. In order to keep the license active the woman would undergo a physical examination by a doctor every day.

Don't stop there. I think we should set up clinics for IV drug users and such. They come in and listen to some rubbish about rehabilitaion and such and then are given a choice to continue their lifestyle. Then once they decide to continue in their lifestyle they go into a room where a trained physician and nurse are sitting there ready to do blood tests and a physical on the patient before letting the patient administer their respective herion or other drug of choice. Then once the physical is complete the patient may be given the choice of IV nutrition or other such treatements based upon the results of their physical. Then once that is all squared away the nurse can then hand the patient a sterile syringe in which the patient is then free to administer their own IV drugs. The patient can then be monitored so as to ensure he or she does not overdose or if they choose to overdose staff is available 24/7 to do countermeasures to help them stay alive. Patients could potentially live the rest of their lives in this druged out half dead state but in a safe environment.

Originally posted by arrakisWhat do you mean by a physical examination every day? To check and see if some guy has given her an STD? If you want it to be safe for everybody, how about check the guys as well and license them to use her services - see how many men would like to undergo that examination once a week - never mind once a day! After all, where would a prostitute get her STD from?

This prostotution legalization thing is just a way to get more tax money. There is no other way to explain it.
While people are trying to limit through legislation other risk behaviors such eating foods with transfats, people are trying to legalize prostitution. As if prostotution is safer then eating transfats.
They try to legalize prostitution while making criminals out of smokers.

I know, legalize prostitution and tax it to death like they do cigarettes and alcohol. I believe the taxes are referred to as "sin taxes" and they justify taxing them to death because everyone knows that they are in large part undesirable vices. Gambling is another rising source of tax revenue for our federal government that is also a vice. I often think of it as a voluntary taxes on the poor.

Do you know what all of these "sinful" activities have in common? The more you practice them the higher your odds become for you to harm yourself or making your life less desirable to live or even kill you. Oh yea, the other thing they all have in common is that they can be extremly addictive so if they can get you traveling down one of these roads or all of them the greater likelyhood that you will be unable to stop and it will end up destroying you physically/financially/emotionally. But hey, as long as we can make $$$ off you in the process mores the merrier right?

Originally posted by whodeyWhat do you think prostitution is? Take the money transaction* out of it and it is just casual sex. You just threw drugs into it to make your weak argument have a little more impact.

*Not always money, by definition:
The term prostitution refers to the act of having sexual intercourse or performing other sexual acts, explicitly for material compensation -- normally money, but also other forms of property, including drugs, expensive clothing, jewelery, or real estate.

This basically will mean that if a man was to go to a bar, buy her a number of drinks, pays for her to go to a club, buys her more drinks. They go home and have casual sex and then she disappears the next morning. If she did that just to get free drinks, then that is prostitution. Just dressed up in a different way to how most people perceive it.
Drugs isn't endemic to prostitution.
Originally posted by Remora91Legalizing is a long way from making prostotution safe. Yes, it would very likely go a long way toward reducing the assaults these women received if prostitution was carried out in a more controlled environment. This does not equate to a reduction in STDs. That's were the public health arguement comes in. If private business cannot allow people to engage in a legal activity like smoking due to it's health effects on non smokers, prostition should not be allowed for the same reason. STDs spread to people not involved with prostitution much like smoking effects non smokers.

Originally posted by MerkWell if this is going to be a business that the government can tax, perhaps clients should have to sign forms that warn them of the dangers and says that they accept responsibility for any STDs they pick up and spread from the brothel. And maybe we should have special brothels where prostitutes with STDs can have clients with the same ones. This would allow clients with needs to practice sex responsibly, and allow women who have been infected to stay in the business. Plus, I think condoms should be mandatory and so should regular exams by doctors for both patients and clients. If any STDs are detected, if the client has a partner, they should be notified immediately. As for AIDS and herpes (etc.), all the prostitutes should be put on antibiotics to lessen the chance of them spreading or contracting it.
