damn environmentalists..
this time, they're getting their way...
and it's screwing over the middle class...
last tuesday, the Supreme Court made a decision which will allow the EPA to have more control over reducing pollution...
since the leaders of the EPA are appointed, not elected, they have no worries about mandating to car companies that they be more efficcient( sp?)
they would also make the gas companies make cleaner fuels-- making gas prices go higher than they already are...
prices for transportation in general are going to skyrocket...
just so we can have a cleaner environment...
to a degree, that's fine...
but when Americans are losing jobs over it, i get ticked...
coal mines, concentrated in Ohio have been shut down, ridding 36,000 americns of their jobs...
so, now we have a situation in america where a federal agency has the power to jack up prices and unemploy thousands of americans...
obviously, if the EPA oficials were elected, instead, this would be a diferrent story
I don't like seeing an agency with this much power unless:
a.) the officials are elected
or
b.) it is an intelligence agency (FBI or CIA)

the debate:
should americans get the opportunity to elect these EPA officials, or at least have a larger say in the acts the Agency wants to employ?
I believe yes
any other thoughts?

We could create thousands of new jobs by relining all of our schools with asbestos, but that wouldn't make it okay.
Now use this idea and work backwards, those jobs are doing bad in the long term...

Hmmm...I know some Americans have a strange detestation of the words "working class", but somehow I've never thought of the average pitworker as middle class.

let me put this into more perspective for you...
Imagine that you are a hardworking laborer...
you work 40 hours a week to put bread on the table for your three children...
you are eating dinner one night, when someone knocks on the door...
when you go to answer it, you see a government man there with an expressionless look on his face...
you're in a good mood because your son just finished writing a "My Dad's the Best" paper for his third grade class...
the man at the door says:
"we're sorry sir, but we are closing the factory at which you worked. you'll no longer have money to put food on the table, but don't get down! We are doing this to protect the environment! although you and your family may starve, there is less of a chance of any of you developing respiratory illnesses! good day, sir."
personally, i'd want to beat the chicken feathers out of the guy...

So what does this have to do with the middle-class??
Clearly what you're describing is working-class. 😕

The middle class generally have more education for them to use in getting a new job, the working class have more trouble in doing this; your title is erroneous.

Fine.
Clearly carbon capture technolgies need to be implemented at the power plants.

Why do you assume environmentalists like myself want to do something so stupid, you don't even need to shut the power plants to reduce their emissions.
It isn't my fault that your government can't pull it's finger out.

Their certainly is clear distinction here, I don't know about you though.
Coal miners are almost exclusively working class, Maggie killed off a lot of our coal industry though, good riddance I say...

The general population might not, but your friends and family still will, I would hope.
You know the voting system is stupid, if your the leader of the major party you could get 30% of the total vote and still get in power with a majority in the house of commons, all because of the first past the post system...😠

are you kidding me?
someone got in with just 30%?
wow
we don't get it THAT bad here in the states...
i'd prefer a population vote for president...
only good thing to come out of electoral system is that Al Gore isn't in office...
that'd be almost as bad as Clinton...
who was a twit...

More likely, the government passes an environmental standard. Government or private company inspectors come in and monitor the plant. They show the executive which parts of the plant which are failing, and help devise an action plan to bring the plant up to standard. The company then hires a local construction business, or businesses, because of the need for joiners, electricians, fitters etc, to bring the plant up to standard.

Thus, jobs have been created in the construction industry, in the scientific analysis industry, in the manufacturing industries which supply them.

Another possibility is that the plant closes. However, the social security system picks up the slack, lets the guy feed his family whilst retraining for a new job fulfilling the need of whatever the previous plant was doing. Obviously someone needed its product, and that need hasn't went away.

[edit; oh, and I do have a stake in the success of local companies, and in what they do, if I don't want my local rivers or the air to become polluted. Government legislation is the way that is enacted.]

I believe that what rubberjaw is trying to say is, "it's okay to poison people, provided it's creating jobs".
