What you have been describing is not greed. It seems to me you are describing a desire to better oneself. I don't think anyone would argue that's a bad thing.
Greed is the accumulation of more stuff than you could possibly need, usually to the detriment of others. In the general case, I personally, don't think it is inherently "evil" but am certain that it leads to destruction one way or another.
As mentioned before "excessive" anything is not good, that's the very definition of excessive - tooooooo much.
...but that leads us to the next problem; too much? by who's standard? A starving Sudanese may say that about the amount of food on your plate. There are as many answers as there are people. IMHO it is the person themself who decides "Hey, that's too much." (no more barbie dolls for me...or..I need to cut back on training it's taking over my life) then does something about it.
