Why are all the white people fleeing South Africa? According to the Economist:
A decade-and-a-half after the end of apartheid, violent crime is pushing more and more whites out of South Africa. Exactly how many are leaving is impossible to say, but large white South Africa diasporas, both English- and Afrikaans-speaking, have sprouted in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and many cities in North America, says the Economist.
According to the South African Institute of Race Relations, 800,000 or more whites have emigrated since 1995, out of the four million-plus who were there when apartheid formally ended the year before. But not all South African émigrés are white: skilled blacks can be found in jobs all over the world. Indeed, a recent survey found that the desire to emigrate is pretty even across races, says the Economist:
• Last year, 42 percent of colored (mixed-raced) South Africans, 38 percent of blacks and 30 percent of those of Indian descent were thinking of leaving, compared with 41 percent of whites.
• This is a big leap from 2000, when the numbers were 12 percent, 18 percent, 26 percent and 22 percent respectively.
• But it is the whites, by and large, who have the money, skills, contracts and sometimes passports they need to start a life outside – and who leave the bigger skills and tax gap behind.
• Violent crime is the one factor cited by all races and across all professions when people are asked why they leave. Police figures put the murder rate in 2007-08 at 38 per 100,000 and rape at more than 75 per 100,000.
Furthermore, this flight is affecting all business sectors in the country, says the Economist. About half a million posts are vacant in government service; not a single department has it full complement of professionals. Local municipalities and public hospitals are also desperately short of trained people. Nearly 25,000 teachers are leaving the profession every year, and only 7,000 are entering.

- When blacks took over, a lot of whites lost their cushy government jobs. Some of those whites stayed and got busy getting productive -- if underemployed. Others said "hell with this," and left. The blacks who got the work have been learning on the job. They certainly weren't all adequately trained beforehand. so services have suffered.
- What has been happening worldwide in farming happened in a big way in SA in 1995+. Government subsidies went away, farmers had to change crop strategies and get big or get out. So some white farmers sold up and left. The remaining farmers didn't need all the hired help from 3-4 farms -- so they laid off the excess workers. Those guys headed for the cities, looking for work. Hence the increase in crime.
People say they want to leave, but your home country has a hold on you. I know at least one white SAn who left and moved back. And a few whites from Zim have moved in.
So I don't know what the rate of whites leaving is today -- I'll wait to hear from the Bosse -- but I suspect it may have slowed.
Last year, 42 percent of colored (mixed-raced) South Africans, 38 percent of blacks and 30 percent of those of Indian descent were thinking of leaving, compared with 41 percent of whites. Those 'figures' are obviously bull. Christ, surely even you can't believe that more than a third of the population want to leave?

What did they suck to come by these 'statistics'?
From the South African lady my wife knows from an internet board, if you are white and are not rich enough to have personal security, then your life is in constant danger. Unless you are rich enough to live in protected neighborhoods, it just isn't safe.
I know that if I didn't feel safe where I lived, I'd want to move.

MANY of the people who left are the kind of racist ass who says he won't work under, live next to, or share a bus with a black man.
Sure, many of these people took needed skills out with them, but we don't need those types here... Once education fills the gap left by apartheid and the people who left the country, we will be doing just fine.
Violent crime is definitely a problem here. Poverty is to blame for most crime, but there is a serious propensity towards violent crime which can be worrying. Especially armed robbery which is accompanied by murder or attempted murder many times and the high rape figures are worrying.
There seems to be a lack of respect in general in the country.

I live in a normal, quiet, suburban neighbourhood. We only recently installed an alarm system, but it was more for insurance purposes and just plain common sense than fear of our lives.
There are many horror stories about house robberies, but unfortunately this sells newspapers. They won't sell their paper if they do a story about me who has never been the victim of any crime...
Race has nothing to do with it. Both the black lady and guy who work for me have had their houses broken into, her daughter was burgled just a week ago and the guy has been assaulted and mugged. By black people.
The poor, black communities are rife with crime.
Don't believe everything some paranoid, bored housewife tells your wife...
What is the ethnic make up of your quiet suburban town? Is it mostly white? Or is the ethnic make up proportional to the general population?
What percentage of the white population can afford to live where you live?
By the way, they have already moved to the UK and she is the one who is working. Her husband is staying home with the kids.
Usually, when the economy of any country has a long term troubles or when there's major political turmoil, people leave. The people that leave are the ones with the means to - which means the educated and skilled - and that causes more economic weakening. Weak economies have more crime, which is another good reason to leave.
Whitey had a relatively easy way out and was more educated and more skilled, so it shouldn't be a surprise that the crackers bailed in larger parts than the blacks, who had more heritage there than whitey did anyway.
Originally posted by EladarLook, residential make up is still very much divided along racial lines - this is still the product of the apartheid years. Anyone with an average job can afford a house in my area - it's nothing special.

Around me I know of two black families and a 'coloured' family - the husband i a colleague of my wife.

Your post is a little rough around the edges, but yes. It's true.
