Your informant probably doesn't know much about how black people live.

A colleague of mine lives in a comfortable house in Langa, Cape Town. Earns a good salary, quiet neighbourhood. The community abides by a strict code of rules based on the maxim "don't defecate in your own back yard". It's not the norm, but more common than you might think.
My informant is white and describes how white people live. Was the information accurate for the general population? Do people in general run the risk of being murdered and/or raped in their own homes? Is that par for the course in SA? Is it common for people to have someone they know be a victim of rape or murder?

Obviously. I mean, I've thought of emigrating too. Thinks: Should I emigrate? Let's see: 5 years' hard labour to break even in a foreign country where I'll be treated like a foreigner, with 2 kids ... No, I don't think so.

Plus, a lot of those immigrants are probably going to be returning from Dubai (or Seoul, in the case of many teachers) with extr ...[text shortened]... Saffas in the UK -- it's extraordinary what dickheads so many of them are, isn't it?
Yeah, I know a few people in Dubai. A friend of my dad just got a 6 year contract there - he's a fireproof mason - I'm not sure if that's the correct English.
He'll come back with a truckload of money and start a business here. What a pleasure!

It's not even particularly accurate for the white population.

Your questions are too general. Do people run the risk of being murdered? Yes, like everywhere in the world. What is the risk exactly? That depends on a whole lot of things.

Here's an article about the latest crime statistics:

Do you think it's reasonable to suggest that your informant may be exaggerating for emotional reasons?

Where are people NOT at risk of being raped or murdered in their homes?
'Par for the course'? What does that mean? I don't know ANYONE in my extended family or friends circle that have been raped or murdered...

I asked if it was common for people to know individuals who have been murdered?

Looking at this site, it appears that SA if one of the least safe countries in the world:

Even using the new lower numbers from that article, SA is still ranked number 2.

If standardized aussie parsing rules apply then I suppose saussies would be about correct weight!😉

Wow, if those numbers are accurate then it seems pretty bad...

Still, just like most countries, there are places you can walk safely and some places you will get trouble. In SA that trouble may mean your life, sure.

It's very unfortunate, but it's not like murder is rife all over the place. Like I said - I have no family or friends who have been murdered or who even knew someone who was murdered. Or raped for that matter.

EDIT! That site has some really weird info: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_unp_dip_par_fin-crime-unpaid-diplomatic-parking-fines
