China sends more jets; Taiwan says it will fight to the end if there's war

TAIPEI (Reuters) - China sent more fighter jets into Taiwan’s air defence zone on Wednesday in a stepped up show of force around the island Beijing claims as its own, and Taiwan’s foreign minister said it would fight to the end if China attacks.

Have you considered the wider consequences such a war will have?

The Chinese, British and US governments have.
And the scale of escalation is so enormous it can’t be fathomed.

Best to keep your warmongering for nations which are too weak to defend themselves. I dunno, maybe there’s a Pacific Island somewhere you can invade and turn the population anti-American.

I’m sure that any short lived war resulting from an invasion by the mainland would be at best/worst a proxy war between the US and China.
If we didn’t do πŸ’© when Russia invaded the Crimea and eastern Ukraine why do you think we would do πŸ’© if China invades itself.
This is a domestic problem, the best thing that the US can do for Taiwan and its own allies is convince Taiwan to accept China’s sovereignty in terms of foreign policy and defence whilst trying to lever some domestic autonomy for Taiwan out of the CCP.

The "freest country on earth"? Dude, Google the KMT.

War should never be spoken of so casually. Sweden has mandatory military service for all male citizens. I think this gives the men of that country an appreciation for what engaging in war actually means. This may play a part in why the Swedes are a neutral, non-aligned nation.

Americans, meanwhile, grow up knowing they'll never have to step foot on a battle field, and never actually see what it means to fight, what it means to hold a gun, put your life on the line, and what it means to take another life. Americans support war from the comfort of their own couches. I think requiring all men to participate in military service would benefit America greatly. Knowing your own life could be put on the line would quell this action-movie view Americans have of war.

You mean, like Hong Kong? "One country, two systems."

That's just blowing smoke. China has gradually encroached on whatever autonomy Hong Kong had, including a recent measure ensuring that only loyalists to China can be elected to Hong Kong's government.

China will inevitably do the same to Taiwan.

@Earl-of-Trumps

Should the U.S. defend Taiwan if mainland China were to invade?

Yes, but . . . the U.S. could do several things to defend Taiwan short of putting boots on the ground, the important thing being to send clear pre-emptive signals to avert an invasion. For example:

1. The U.S., could make clear that mainland China would pay a heavy price, in terms of boycotts of its products and services worldwide, if it were to attempt to take the island by force.

2. It could arm Taiwan to the teeth, so that mainland Chinese forces would pay a heavy price in men and materiel, if China were to attempt to take the island by force.

3. It could position warships in the straits to hinder a sea invasion.

4. It could let China have the ground physically, and offer to evacuate as many Taiwanese as wish to leave and give them expedited asylum status to resettle in the USA. A sort of scorched island policy.

That was always a lie we allowed them to tell in order to save face and the end a lease arrangement.
Taiwan is not Hong Kong and could negotiate directly with the CCP rather than relying on its colonial master to come to an arrangement that suits them diplomatically
I take your point though.
