@kevcvs57 -
You would definitely be wrong in my opinion, what’s in it for us earl?
What was in it for the Brits when they attacked Germany for attacking Belgium?
If your talking about the WWI
The the answer is untold death and destruction and the rise of the USA.
If your talking about WWII
Then the answer is the loss of an empire and 60yrs of debt at the hands of our ally?
Nobody declared war on Germany when they marched into the German speaking areas of Central Europe or retook the Rhineland so why would we if China retakes Taiwan or Hong Kong for that matter.
You say “if war breaks out” as if the USA will not have a say in it.
“If war breaks out” it will mean the annihilation of Taiwan and China planting its flag in the rubble. Let it go earl.
The post that was quoted here has been removedNo I just expect you to stop being an ignorant individual, clearly a case of hope over experience.
Lol all you have is insults! It’s a fact that you have yet to post a single enlightening word, sentence or paragraph. Your intellect begins and ends in quotation marks.

Yeah but the Brits did anyway. Just trying to demonstrate, that if you witness an unjustness, do what you can.
The Brits knew that the Yanks would get into it eventually. :Lend Lease" and eventual formal declaration of war.
@earl-of-trumps saidWe witness injustices all the time earl, committed by much less daunting adversaries. I just cannot see this issue warranting a war that could rapidly get beyond anyone’s control.

The world wars, as grim as they were, had limits on their destructive potential, the next big one could literally mean the end of civilisation as we know it if not humanity itself.
@kevcvs57 saidAnd I truly understand your position on this, I had to toss it around a lot myself.

But I came to the conclusion... I can't turn my back on the Taiwanese. Whatever.
@earl-of-trumps saidWell I suppose the US is as much a Pacific based power as an Atlantic one but for most Brits ( well this Brit anyway ) it’s a far away place with a complex history and an issue with the mainland that is better settled between them in a peaceful manner.

My main worry is that the Taiwanese leadership will over estimate the extent to which the US is prepared to endanger its forces and civilians in the cause of its continued independence from what is historically speaking its own mainland.
@kevcvs57 saidThe Brits have more familiarity with the Chinese and Indians than most Western nations.

That is part of the reason why I think the Brits will get involved. But we'll see. Plenty of time, and it may not happen anyway.
U.S. issues guidelines to deepen relations with Taiwan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. State Department on Friday issued new guidelines that will enable U.S. officials to meet more freely with officials from Taiwan, a move that deepens relations with Taipei amid stepped-up Chinese military activity around the island.
“These new guidelines liberalize guidance on contacts with Taiwan, consistent with our unofficial relations,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.
The aim, he said, was “to encourage U.S. government engagement with Taiwan that reflects our deepening unofficial relationship.”
