He presumably made the judgement call that the chances of survival for himself and his wife were higher if he complied with the criminal's demands than if he tried to fight back.
Imagine he had tried to fight back, and the criminal had immediately killed his wife. Then (assuming the husband survived) he would be haunted for the rest of his life by the thought that, if he had gone back to the hotel for the ransom demand, she might still be alive.

Look at all the favoritism and advantages given to different racial groups by govt/university admin/media/etc that white groups don't get or aren't even allowed..
