Why not? Both my current desktop computer and my laptop are Dells, and I haven't had any problems with them, apart from some weird problem with the batteries of my laptop, which resulted in getting new batteries very shortly before the guaranty ran out, so it was actually a good thing. The customer service was flawless.
Originally posted by Dance Master MCI would do the same, if I were you. Especially the operating system of the Mac in general is in my opinion less irritating than Windows.
Any macbook will do, a little on the pricy side, but they last forever, and do not get viruses unless you try to get them, no pop-blocker installation required, faster internet service...
(And it would make you elligable to enter my clan as a bonus!)

Same here. Not only battery problems but other hardware problems occured.
I hear the support for Dell has gone down the tubes but they have gotten me out of jams before.
On the laptop, I have 2 big teenage boys who have a habit of wrestling in the house and when we got our laptop, I got a Gateway at Best Buy, it has worked perfectly, I added a USB port HD so I could record music on it which worked out fine too. But one thing I got, an extended warrenty from Best Buy, a three year contract that cost 300 bucks but if the lap gets run over by a truck, it is replaced no questions asked, literally. Of course only for three years but of course after three years laptops get a bit long in the tooth so we will get another in two years or so but it has worked out fine for me.
half gig of Ram, 1.7 Ghz CPU, wireless built-in, DVD 2 layer burner. Nice screen, plays movies, great little machine. I use it almost every day. I like to use it in bed, the thing on my belly over a pillow and a wireless mouse which detects the sheet just fine! Ultimate lazy man's computer! Surf while half asleep....
The post that was quoted here has been removedIt's just "fashionable" for people to slag off Dell just like people do with Microsoft - half the time they don't have a proper reason.
I've never had a Dell myself but I know a couple of techie people who have them and think they are ok.
The only small problem I can see is that a lot of these 'name' computers don't have interchangeable parts. But to the sort of person who buys them this is irrelevant as they wouldn't normally do their own repairs anyway.
Originally posted by kenanOverall Dells are reputed to be very reliable and the service is better than most. I was the IT manger for a small firm recently and I bought over 40 Dells, and had only one issue with one of the computers, which they attended to promptly.
Which braand should I go into?
Definitely not DELL.
When choosing a laptop, there is no substitute for having a bit of knowledge in your head so that you can carry on an intelligent conversation with sales rep, who will want you to buy more than you need - see links provided by others. Things to look out for are:
- weight
- screen size and resolution
- battery life (over 5 hrs)
- Ram - 1 Gig and over these days Win Vista is a memory hog and takes up about half of that.
- Big Hard Drive (120 gigs and up) if youre into photos or videos
- decent video memory - 512M is good
- USB ports - 4 at least.
At the bottom end of the price spectrum are Acer and Toshiba ($500 to $800), both of which are reliable and at the top end is the Sony - $2000 US and up.

This question goes for anyone.

Thank you very much.
Originally posted by kenanIt all depends on what programs you want to run, and what degree of portalility you need. I bought one of the ultralight, tiny Sony Vaio laptops 2 years ago. Cost $2700 then at Best Buy. Now they are about 2000. That would be my choice.

I'm slagging it because I have one and I have lots of problems. Like I said, I'm on my third adapter AC adapter and second battery. In one year. Sure, the service is ok but then again, I prefer not needing it that often.
And again I'm having battery problems. Currently, my battery indicator says I have 3110 hours left. Whoopidyeffingdoo.
