This thread should perhaps belong in the Debate forum but there I would meet a different kind of people. In this general forum I hope to have views from posters I'm used to.

My 55 year old daughter hardly ever uses alcohol whereas I am very fond of wine. She claims that alcohol is one the most dangerous drugs there are - it's just that we live in a country that accepts alcohol but no other drugs.

Can I have our views, please.
I’ve come late to this party, but I thought it might be interesting to observe that Professor David Nutt, the former government chief drugs adviser, published a list of drugs in order of danger in Lancet, the British medical journal. Needless to say it caused quite a stir. He was immediately sacked!

1. Alcohol
2. Heroin
3. Crack
4. Methamphetamine
5. Cocaine
6. Tobacco
7. Amphetamine
8. Cannabis
9. GHB
10. Benzodiazepenes

From the halcyon days of my previous incarnation (pre marriage) I was a regular number 8 user. To my shame I have now worked my way up the list and use number 1 rather too immoderately!

You should be careful with that perhaps - from what I read in the forums some of the players have been immoderate users of alcohol and now have to abstain totally.

I am no expert in this but I'd say nicotine is far more addictive than alcohol and probably on a par with heroin.
So says my doctor

I met with my canasta friends the other day for a traditional barbeque - we haven't met, all of us, since February last year. This called for a celebration of course with lots of wine, too much. Not that we were drunk or even tipsy as we were there for several hours, but it was bad for my body with pain and discomfort in the night. Totally unnecessary, a few glasses would have been quite enough.

I once drank absinthe, the real stuff. My associate had the slotted spoon etc. A great high, but the next day OMG!
