There's always an exception to a rule. I do most of my real work on a laptop. It also happens to be an Apple contraption. It is ten years old but still does everything I need to do. It looks good, it will go for ten hours on two fresh batteries, the keyboard is better than any other I have ever used, the screen is a sensible size and it cost me £50 on eBa ...[text shortened]... hone to convince me that touch screen technology is a step too far for an old Luddite like me.

I engage with everybody, it's just that you're quite touchy sometimes. There's no problem with you, I like your opinions.

Originally posted by wormwoodIt has word processing software with it I think (corect me if I'm wrong plz). I would find that app extremely valuable. If they have a collapsable keyboard extra, then it becomes a home run. Leave they keyboard at home or work if you know you don't need it, take it if you have some heavy writing to do. The pad has a touch screen keyboard, but i wouldn't do more than a quick e-mail on that.
mac mini never got any cheaper.
I'm not much of an apple fan, but I think ipad has some promise. you can do everything you're REALLY gonna do on the move, which is maybe browse web, watch porn and write an email or three. NOBODY really does any real work on a laptop, which is far too heavy to be comfortably dragged around anyway. the only people who do ...[text shortened]... e price they're asking. a 100e maybe, and even that mostly because I'm a tech geek.
also the iphone was very expensive when it came out, and is now much cheaper; plus I want the bugs worked out of the first generation before I lay down any cash.

Originally posted by CrowleyI reckon it is probably a lot less than 10%. I remember more of my colleagues carting laptops about when they were smaller - 12 inch screens and so on. Now although they are often as light (or lighter) as those antiques the shear physical size is an obstacle. Who wants to try and balance one of Apple's 17 inch screen monsters on a lap or small desk?
Well, then you're part of the probably less than 10% of people who actually do this.

Originally posted by Crowleyyep, you can. but doesn't that make it just a crappy desk computer though? 🙂

I can't imagine anyone doing any serious writing on a touch screen. because 1) no tactile sense of keys makes typing a pain in the ass, and 2) it would probably kill your wrists because of crap ergonomics.
People wil buy this thing because they think it's cool. Apple will make a tonne of money from it.
But there is only one problem. People don't read. They will buy this thing and then realize they don't read newspapers or books. People will not buy e-books or e-newspapers.
It will sit on their coffee table so that they can show it off to their friends but they won't use it.
It will only be used by the odd university student and old people who can't see the numbers on their regular sized cell phones. So, go buy your paperweights you lemmings!
