The whole RN debarcle has left a sour taste in these forums. Too much was said by too many people and they are a worse place for it, regardless of a rec system. I for one get a lot less enjoyment from these forums than I used to. Nowadays there's battle-lines, hostility and history which make what used to be amusing interplay subject to misinterpretation and volatile reaction.
Take it back about 12 months and things were great, if you weren't here then, you missed the golden age of the General Forum.

Seriously. Aren't the forums exactly the same as they've always been?
I don't think changing the rec-system this or that way will actually change
anything. You want more fun in the forums? So, write something funny then.
Geez, so much whining about this you'd think you're in the ladies room or
something.
The rest is know nothings talking about what they are good at talking about.........oh, and me, mokko, and Frank π

Oh Jeez, the rec thing again... I've read through some of this thread and I find myself coming back to the same thoughts.
The Rec system was useful if used as originally intended by Russ.
The Rec system wasn't used as intended by most of the forum posters.
The Rec system had to go as Russ decided(in my opinion) that the recommended posts were a bad advertisement for the site.
The system did have it's merits the way it was being used though, it gave you a feel for how long a particular poster had been around, it gave you a feel for how that posters views were aligned to the community as a whole. But that is all I used it for, it gave me a clue who the regulars were and who the trolls were. Unfortunately the trolls didn't like this as they were too easily identified so through various means set about systematically destroying the system. It made me laugh that [Bowmann]some users[/Bowmann] had more recs than chess moves but that is what they chose to use the site for.
Many similar systems could and have been suggested, all of which would be subject to the same abuse as recs were.
So I don't think there's a single cure for the pish that is the general forum except for everyone to put a little more thought and effort into what they post, try to post things that you think someone else would recommend to the community and if you are incapable, do us a favour and don't bother.
