Neither. But I am incredibly handsome, if that explains anything.

Saffron retails at around $1,000 per pound or US$2,200 per kilogram the reason being it takes a pretty big area to produce a pound, it's harvesting is also very labor intensive.

This pricing makes it one of the most expensive substances to be consumed by humans. Pricier than cocaine depending on the volumes you buy.

Also most people don't even know how to cook with it making most of the users pretentious rich folk.

That's for half a gram.

Edit: My maths left me... Time to go to bed. It's of course $15,000 per kg, i.e. even more expensive.

Right, but I think that half a gram will go a very long way. You don't need to buy it by the truckload.

Two weak before Christmas we are eating some cakes with the name "Lussekatter". If you don't use saffron when you are baking them, then you must have missed the point....

In the Spanish food "Paella" you are also using saffron. It usually tastes really good 🙂 and you can also use saffron in other sea-food dishes.

It is expensive but lovely species. How would the world be, without saffron ??

it's not a bad spice, it's just way to expensive and added to a lot of things just because of it's name. and not what it brings to the actual dish.

ask any real chef what his/her favorite spice or herb is and i'm sure none of them will say saffron. a lot of them will say a vanilla pod however, that thing is a marvel of the universe 😏

Small cafe in a very small town by the name of Wanda's Place makes the best BLTs and cheeseburghers I've ever tasted anywhere. By the way, I cooked three pheasants today and my husband thought he was in Heaven. Two went into the freezer, and there will be leftovers tomorrow from the third. The extra gravy will get put into two containers to go with the other two pheasants. We have pheasants on our land, but we protect them. Someone always gives us his surplus during hunting season. These were fat from eating grain around his farmstead. He easily gets his limit every year. What I hate hearing about is the rich guys coming here from other states to hunt pheasants, and the motel dumpsters are where the birds end up. Bad enough to shoot them, but then to just dump them is criminal.

That's a shame that happens with the birds. Isn't there a market where the over kill can be sold or given to?
