This reminded me of a time, years ago, working at Delphi Automotive in Flint, MI, I was tasked to help make a workcell auditworthy. I made repeated attempts to work with the cell "team leader", only to be told things like, "Can't you see I'm on a s s time?"
Every day, I'd walk the aisles, spotting workers sleeping on whatever makeshift bed they could thr ...[text shortened]... ars, being urged to vote them in. Twice, they have voted them down. I wonder why...
I have also been management, and worked the 50 60 hour work week. You don't honestly think the executive VP's are putting that much time in do you? Hardly...they let middle management (a bunch of underpaid, scared of loosing their job humps) do thier dirty work.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVER NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN !!!!!

The union has given people a sense that management is the enemy, and that the union will protect them from being fired, the idea that the union is for them, and the company against them.

Originally posted by PalynkaTrue enough, but managers don't (from what I've seen) sit around blaming the union on a daily basis, instead they put more pressure on their salaried underlings to come up with fixes to work around the lazy union mentality. It's a game of automating just about everything possible, eliminating as much room for human error as possible, but keeping the hourly body there to push the buttons with it's eyes closed.

I'd like to see a Chinese worker tell her manager to find her later, she's on asstime.

It would not be tolerated where I work, while nobody is standing over my shoulder making sure I do my job (or my coworkers), we generally police ourselves. if one person doesn't carry xer weight, then everyone else has to pick up the slack. The mentality that its okay to sit around and do nothing should have been nipped in the bud when it started, both by management, and by shop stewards.

We say all the time that our union has a vested interest in the success of the employer, we let them know that. We are in effect a partnership. unfortunately, many managers also have the us vs. them mindset, and treat their workers like crap...so they get what they deserve.
