Not to the person on the street, it isn't. Ask Joe Schmoe walking by the training hall what those guys inside are wearing, and unless you're in Japan, you won't hear him say "gi," much less "dogi."

"Man, I have to wash my dogi today."

"Really? He looks so well-groomed already!"

Actually, forget it. I can't be bothered to argue semantics today.

Why all the denigration of the Martial Arts? It's a sport like any other. They are not taught to kick anyone's ass, but just the opposite. Possibly you have some insecurities or maybe you have a hard on for Nam Vets. Why do you care about their sport philosophy.

Punch, kick, throw, joint manipulation.

You're right. Nobody could think that kind of training was about beating someone up.

Certainly it woud help somewhat if attacked by an average big mouth. Wouldn't help at all against MMA like in the UFC. And they are taught to get their puch or kick in and then retreat (run). The punch or kick is to make space to be able to retreat and save yourself. That Asian philosophy comes from where MA originated from.

No, not certainly. If you had aptitude, about ten years of solid training, and were solidly built, you'd be okay in a bar fight, if there weren't breakable objects nearby.

Basically, big guys beat little guys. There are exceptions, but they are such as to prove the rule.

Getting a punch or kick in to make space to run away is not exactly kicking ass.

So, you're saying MA won't help give you a better chance for survival? I've seen little guys beat big guys and little guys beat little guys. You are obviously a big strong dude and are good at street fighting. Most people aren't. Even street fighting is an art form. They use what works and screw the rest. What's wrong with training MA ( would not take 10 years) to be ok in a bar fight. I've never seen a bar fight last more than 15 seconds anyway. I'm talking about a real fight on the street.

Lucky Blak. We were all dissapointed that you missed our Associations gathering in Las Vegas this last weekend. We were really hoping that you would join us. We are meeting here again in July of 2008 and I hope you can make arrangements to join us then. I would be honored if you would stay at my home here and enjoy the festivities. I've always tried to remain a humble and teachable student in all my endevors. Hopefully I can learn from you. Please let me know if you can come to Las Vegas. Oh. Just remember, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!
Most Sincerely,
Michael

I'm not saying little guys can't beat up big guys. Would I want to walk up and take a swing at Mikio Yahara? No way. There are of course exceptions to the rule -- but they are, by and large, exceptions.

Street fighting an art form? Maybe in West Side Story, or the video to "Beat It." I don't see it, otherwise.

Why do I feel like I'm reading a post from rec.martial.arts?

I take it you aren't going to actually engage here.
