It's easier to blame people who do cosmetic surgery without even caring why they actually did it.
That some people are misguided and do things for the wrong reasons, doesn't mean that there aren't good reasons to do it. And looking better is a perfectly good reason for cosmetic surgery.
So do people have good reason? I think not in most cases. Most people are normal - they have normal breasts, normal noses... but normal isn't good enough when perfection is being pushed in our faces 24/7
Why is 'looking better' (which I'd hasten to add many people don't after cosmetic surgery) a good reason? It doesn't make people feel better in the long term unless the surgery corrects something that was causing them genuine physical or psychological harm. People who undergo surgery because they think it'll make them happier because they'll 'look better' are mainly deluding themselves. I just don't think that life-threatening, often scaring, expensive, and painful surgery should be touted as a magic "this is going to improve your life" cure.

If yes, then we have to treat each case as an individual one. All people I know who actually did cosmetic surgery (not many, I agree) for aesthetic reasons alone are pretty sane, normal and happy. It's then their right to do whatever they want with their bodies, as long as they are sane. If they pay for it privately, know the risks (no matter what they are) and still go through with it, what is the problem? It's their body and it's pretty shallow to judge them for wanting to look the way they want.

I'm not saying your friends are not sane or normal. But all that money and pain, risking scaring and even death, just to maybe look a little better - I don't think that is a good mentality. Again, I'm not judging the people but rather questioning why people are made to feel that this is something they need to do.
{edit} sorry, I didn't answer your first question... yes, it's irrelevant whether anyone likes the result other than the person. what I question is why they feel the need for that 'result' when there's nothing wrong with them in the first place.

You suppose that people preferring fake plastic things to hanging, but natural, things, is normal? Is healthy?
Women, statistically, prefer successful men to handsome men, by the way. So that basically blows the ugly befriends ugly theory out of the water. Doesn't it?
who likes gigantic feet on women? I'm sure the women with huge feet have a lot of issues about them. and that's why we should bring back the good old tradition of foot reduction. just cut the sole, fold the foot and wrap tightly. in just a few year it won't even hurt much, and the women can wear the tiniest shoes. no more feeling awkward about huge bigfoot feet!Oh yeah...look at these sexy feet!

1) You are completely twisting my words to suit your purpose. Nowhere did I state that people ought to prefer fake plastic things to hanging natural things. I just don't find it abnormal that some people would. Diff'rent strokes for different folks. You, of all people, should understand that.
2) Your statistical claim that women prefer successful men to handsome men is irrelevant, misleading and typical of those nonsense-type polls you find in trashy magazines. The choice in mates is never clear cut between "success" and "looks", there are far more important things than either of those two qualities to consider when talking about attraction.

I, myself possess both.
Plastic surgeons, God bless them, see both as being correctable. But surgeons are trained to achieve Pyrrhic victories and cannot help themselves.
Perhaps medical training should be changed so that doctors feel that it is ethically wrong to waste their time on such impossibilities when there are more pressing problems.
Personally, every wart and wrinkle that I possess is precious to me and I ask,
why is the death mask of Oliver Cromwell so intriguing
...... it is because of all the enormous facial warts.
If he had had them removed would history still remember him ?
