@very-rusty saidThat is usually a different profession, different education. I could have worked at a reception desk, with a bit of professional training. A secretary often had another education with shorthand and typing as main tasks. At my first job I also worked as switchboard operator.
Aren't they called receptionist's now?
You have both male and female.

@torunn saidYes, they had secretaries do all sorts of odd jobs, including making the coffee and bringing a cup to the boss.

@earl-of-trumps saidCoffee was a natural part of the job, for my boss, during meetings and for guests. I never minded that. Those girls who did mind didn't usually stay very long, they might have tried another profession. I was a fairly good shorthand-typist, knew English and German, filled in during vacancies and served coffee. I was never bored.

The thing that disturbs me though is the fact that women's wages are lower than men's wages for equal jobs.

@torunn saidThis is so wrong that it's hard to fathom what employers are thinking when implementing such an obvious disparity.

Greed is not good.
@wolfe63 saidThere are also subtle hidden inequalities. Once doctors are on the top increment of their payscale they still get discretionary bonuses added to their pay. Some of this is completely justified for time given to research that they were not contractually obligated to do and reward for innovations. In my opinion some is for committee type work of limited merit which more men seemed to find the time for than women. I was left with the impression that there were more female doctors on lower take home pay due to putting in a solid shift without the frills, including working overtime for free where continuity of care demanded that (you can't always just walk away from the situation), but then going home to busy family lives. They would tend to be overlooked by the local awards committees. So everybody was technically on the same pay scale with the same pay awards, but it evolved into women seeming to take home less actual money.

The other side of the coin is that as the intake to medical school has become 70% female there has been a gradual recognition that a higher proportion of the profession will want family friendly contracts without on call and there will be more posts that need cover for maternity leave. With the year on year 'cost improvements' in the NHS this has meant more services too thin on the ground to cover, with more expensive locums employed to ensure an out of hours service was available. There was recently a doctor from Germany flying over to work locum weekends as the locum rates made that in his interest.
@torunn saidSomething they've been years trying to get equal pay, my opinion if they are just as good at the job then they should get the same money. Of course they shouldn't start out with the same amount a man working their for 20-25 years makes as a person just starting on the job either.

I have my first Women doctor in my life. There seem to be more of them. I had a bicep tendon tore and a Woman surgeon, the physio therapist I had to see afterwards was a woman.....There seem to be a lot of women in medical practice.

@very-rusty saidI would guess that the difference and inequality in salary has its tradition in men being the provider in the family - his money were considered more important than hers. But all that has changed so equal pay should apply.

@torunn saidI remember back in the day when women started working. A man said some day women will take over and there will not be jobs for men.

@very-rusty saidI believe I mentioned earlier in this thread that there are men who are afraid of female progress. I think I read a book about it too many years ago - 'Backlash' by Susan Faludi.

@torunn saidI think the fear back then was there wasn't enough jobs for women & men. In Todays world you pretty much need two working to make ends meet, or I know of many people who do.

@earl-of-trumps saidI don't know what to say except it's still wrong. There are many other things going on that also feel wrong but there isn't anything we can do about that in a forum. They mostly concern young people.
