"Community discussion guidelines" (February 18, 2014)

"About Us: NewsWorks seeks to be an oasis for lively, smart, civil discussion of issues and events. That's why we've set these guidelines for the NewsWorks online community. In the end, a community works only to the degree that its members put in the effort to make it work. No high-traffic, public website can absolutely prevent trolls and flamers from doing what they do. We can't absolutely guarantee that an unseemly digital fight will never break out. We can only do so much to keep the peace. With the help of the bulk of readers who want the NewsWorks community to become that oasis, we can build something valuable.

Now, for the guidelines: If you can't be polite, don't say it

WHYY in no way wishes to stifle discussion of controversial issues and does not expect all users to agree with one another or with WHYY/NewsWorks staff. Debate is fine; it is expected. But let us all try to disagree without being disagreeable. That way, even in argument, we can learn from one another. Remarks should be focused on positions, not personalities — no personal attacks, name calling, libel, defamation, hate speech, etc. If you disagree with someone, it is so much more powerful to explain why you do, based on your values and experiences, than to simply sling insults. And under no circumstances should anything be posted that could be construed by reasonable people as threatening, harassing, bullying, obscene, pornographic, sexist or racist. You may not be able to persuade other readers that you are right and they are wrong. That's OK. Nice try, anyway. It you reach an impasse, don't worry. You can move on, your opponent can move on, and life for the rest of us can move on as well.

Don't use obscenities

Even if a particular word is often used in conversation, these are public forums and we want everyone to feel comfortable participating.

Please stay on topic, be clear and concise

Please limit your comments to those that are relevant to the topic being discussed and to no more than a few paragraphs. Please respect other readers' privacy. While it is interesting to learn about new individuals, please do not share another’s contact information through WHYY’s discussion threads or social networking features.

So, don't feed the trolls

We encourage users to report abuse by trolls, the people who seek only to foment and insult. But we ask that you not engage with trolls in the comment threads. Acknowledging them only encourages them." http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/local/about-us/65016-discussion-rules

I haven't thumbed anything up or down, Grampy Bobby. You're just making stuff up.

The comment you were (purportedly) replying to was about how you personally brandish the word "troll".

This is what your Red Hot Pawn Profile will have for header information if you're ever given a Maximum Ban. So think twice before you click [Post].
Who out of this community deserves "a Maximum Ban" in your opinion?

Neither your "opinion" nor mine matters. Presuming to offer one is tantamount to personal attack and fixation on personalities rather than this or any thread's topic. Russ as the Sole Proprietor of Red Hot Pawn [not its members] decides whose egregious violations call for and justify the severity of a "Maximum Ban..

Do you believe the people whose personalities you are fixated on here day after day ~ those you start threads about; those you offer spam and copy pastes instead of discussing things etc. ~ have committed "egregious violations"?

It's encouraging to see another responsible person driving his own bus in the direction of an online community where acceptance of authority and civility matter. I appreciate your disregard of the vocal majority and presence of seemingly incorrigible "Internet Trolls" on this forum. Thanks for being here. .

"Internet trolls really are miserable people" (March 1, 2014 redd-mbeauchamp)

"If you’ve read the comments on this blog or on Redding.com, you’ve met them. Now new research confirms that they can be Narcissistic, Machiavellian, psychopathic, and sadistic personality types. (And I’d add cowards to that sad list.) Excerpt from an article at Slate.com: “In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics.

“That’s bad, but it’s nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).

“It is hard to overplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. What’s more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet."

If you are not willing to say who you think deserves "a Maximum Ban", despite having brought the notion up and brandished it, are you willing to say who in this community ~ in your estimation ~ has been the victim of "egregious violations"?

What is your fixation with trolls all about?
The endless pasting of lists of troll type behaviour (or any other type of list) - you realise that very behaviour could easily be described as trolling?

He doesn't even realise the spittle running down his jowls could be described as drooling.

"10 Ways to Destroy An Online Commenting Troll"

"Trolls aren’t exactly a new phenomenon on the internet – they’ve been lingering around trying to cause trouble for years. If that’s the case, then why have trolls become such a hot-topic lately? It’s pretty simple – with more people using the internet, there’s a higher percentage of people who having better to do than harass people and disrupt forums and blogs. Some people think trolls aren’t a big deal and that people are being too sensitive, but the truth is trolls are at best a pesky nuisance, and at worst very nasty and border on what could be considered assault. Particularly for brands, trolls need to be dealt with swiftly. A troll’s comments can give you a bad reputation and deter visitors from your social media pages or blogs. But, how do you defeat those pesky trolls? Follow our 10 ways to successfully destroy a troll!

10. DON’T SINK TO THEIR LEVEL

What’s the main purpose of a troll? It’s to make people angry or to disrupt the conversation just for kicks. They want your attention. They want to start an argument. Don’t give it to them. Arguing with a troll is like yelling at a wall. It will get you no where. It’s pointless getting angry because some kid or anti-social person said something mean on the internet. Sinking to their level is just feeding the troll. Take a deep breath, walk away, and don’t waste your time getting into an online fight." (to be continued)
