Well, I have to agree with those who loved the movie.
I was one of the lucky few who saw Trilogy Tuesday (shown in theatres - the special extended editions of Fellowship and Two Towers, followed by an early showing of RoTK) and thought the new film was just awesome.
Bravo to Peter Jackson and the gang.
The shows started at 2pm and RoTK started at 10:10pm on Tuesday December 16th 2003. I had some initial worries about sitting through such a long event, but I was completely drawn in and the hours flew by.
Taken as a trilogy, viewed consecutively, the series is amazing, the story so very well told.
Perhaps the AMPAS will finally wake up and there will be some main catagory nominations in wins. Specifically, for Jackson, Sir Ian, Viggo, Best Picture and Sean Astin. Heck, all the cast! Here's hoping.
Originally posted by Poison GodmachineI thought the very same thing. Notice that Sean Astin was also in "The Goonies".
4) This one is kinda silly but it had me smiling throughout the Battle of Pelennor Fields. That main orc general (Gamling) looks almost exactly like that one villian in The Goonies. Hilarious!
-Ray.
Well I just got home about 30 minutes ago from FINALLY seeing the movie. Wow. It was amazing. It has its parts like with Legolas and the Oliphaunt that kind of made me cringe but it didn't even matter.
I do have to agree on the points made of the paths of the dead. While watching the movie I was trying to remember what exactly happened through that part in the book, because I was sure Aragon should have been portrayed more as coming into his own as King. So thanks for clearing that up Latex Bishop, and I agree with you.
I've heard a lot about how the ending just goes on and on, and how they really overdid it. There were a few points where I thought it was the perfect ending but it kept continuing. It really was drawn out, but instead of having the feeling of "come on already, the movie's done, just end it!", it left me with a sense of closure. So I didn't mind it. When they showed the map, which is one of the parts where I thought it was going to end, I was still wanting to see the shire one last time, and there it was! :-)
One of the parts I was looking forward to was seeing how they handled the spider, and I was very happy with the results. I thought it was awesome when she was over Frodo's head.
And about the reunion with everyone, it was better than what I was expecting as I had read stuff in here before I went. The way I see it is Frodo was probably laid up for quite awhile, and the others had to patiently wait for him to wake up, so when it happened, they were excited. Then with everyone so excited, it made it that much more meaningful, the looks Frodo and Sam give to each other, because they shared something and had that connection.
Gollom was just AWESOME throughout the trilogy, they did such an amazing job with him. I thought it was cool to see him as Smeagol at the beginning too.
Okay, that's all I have to say I think. The bottom line is just, wow. Wow, wow, wow. 😀

LISTEN everone having read the books the hobbit, fellowship of the ring, the two towers and return of the king i can say it impossible to put that into film any better i thought it was fantastic book by book film by film you cant beat it quote "the best film of our time" eddie anderson 2004.😉
Watched the Fellowship last night with my SO... it is the first time she ever saw it. I knew she would like it... but now she is kind of mad that she needs to see 2 more movies to finish the story. 😉
I can't wait 'til we watch 2 towers... She's going to love Golum.
I still have not seen the third, but I wanted to watch the first 2 one more time before seeing it.

I haven't read any of the books but enjoyed the movies very much. I'm sure I would be as annoyed as some are with all the stuff thats left out. Just remembr, for a movie thats just over 3hrs, there isnt much more they can put in without boring us no matter how much we like the movie. ive been looking forward to seeing the rotk since TT came out and i even got a lil antsy at the end. My favorite scense throughout the series is in FOTR where the river of horses washes away the ring wraithes. and also in ROTK where the army of the dead basically kills everyone. Definitely awesome. overall i give 2 thumbs up. 😀

i saw it for the first time last night, and i read the book a while ago, so half of this might just be wrong...
but, did aragorn not go north to collect some of his rangers too? ya know, the people that've been defending the shire from everything-thus sarouman could enter the shire and make it his. which he didn't do...
but yeah-apart form what it missed out, which is all kinda acceptable cause it's an interpritation (apart from the eagles-how do they explain the eagles...😕)-it took too long to end. yes, i know the book does. but the films meant to entertain! it kinda bores towards the end...
Originally posted by geniusNo, the rangers came down from the north and met him at Helm's Deep, then went through the Paths of the Dead with him. In the film, they were replaced by elves at Helm's Deep which makes a mockery of the 'Last Alliance of Elves and Men' thing which was supposed to have taken place when they lopped off Sauron's finger.

Only a minor change, though.
Small point, but one of my favourite scenes from the book was when the Witch King tried to enter Minas Tirith and Gandalf stood there and told him to bugger off (not quite like that 🙂). In the film it was missed out.
Originally posted by VargI think this is going to be in the extended DVD version, it is hinted at in this version when they show the door being smashed at from one side with the which king circling in the skies above.

Originally posted by latex bishopI'm glad to hear that. It did look like it was going to happen, and I had a feeling it would be in the extended DVD.

Originally posted by latex bishopIt is most definitely going to be in the extended edition. The LOTR game on the X-box has a number of clips from the movie, and a few have obviously been nicked from the extended, this one included.

There are rumours that the Gandalf WitchKing confrontation (which was in the trailer) concludes with the WitchKing breaking Gandalfs staff. You'll notice that its missing when he rescues Faramir from the pyre and Gandalf is looking a bit rough. People familar with the book will know the consequences of that, so I won't bore you with them.
To me that would have been the most interesting part of the film, because it wasn't in the book but Tolkien did say himself that with his ring the Witchking could defeat even the mighty Gandalf. Also it puts the his scene with Eowyn into a better context.
The Mouth of Sauron is also going to be in the extended edition, its a blink and you'll miss it scene but it occurs just before arragorn and gandalf are riding from the black gate and they start shouting "For Frodo!".
The houses of healing chapter will also be in the extended edition, this is where Aragorn proves he is the true king and Faramir and Eowyn get it on.
Obviously the voice of Saruman bit will be in the EE, we'll see the death of him and Wormtongue.
It fact there is a dose of stuff that didn't make the final cut. I believe at this stage the EE will be around 4 hours 15 minutes.
And yes before you reply, I am quite the geek for knowing about this shite
