oscars are usually the flashing neon sign warning about an awfully boring movie. a movie can be good despite its oscars though.
titanic won 11 oscars. nuff said.
Abou the Ttanic: If you like melodramatic movies, it's actually a pretty good film. I personally like thrillers and films in which the acting is most important, like Glengarry Glen Ross, The Deer Hunter, and for newer stuff: Casino Royale is actually pretty good and The Departed too.

But you know, I saw this movie last year called the ... Titanic. Okay. Now, Bill's quick capsule review: P.O.S. Okay, now … yeah, yeah. End of story, by the way.
Don't get caught up in that fevered hype phoney f***ing debate about that P.O.S. movie. "Is it too melodramatic? And what about the movies, are they becoming too …"
You're just confused, you've forgotten how to judge correctly. Take a deep breath … look at it again. "Oh, it's a P.O.S.!" Exactly, that's all it is. Satan squatted, let out a loaf, they put a f***ing title on it, put it on a marquee – Satan's s***, P.O.S., walk away.
"But is it too … and what about the romantic content, they …" You're getting really baffled here. P.O.S.! Now walk away. That's all it is, it's nothing more! Free yourself, folks. If you see it: "P.O.S.!" Say it and walk away. You're right! You're right, not those f*****s who want to tell you how to think! You're f***ing right!
you're right about the new casino royale though, it was a lot better than I thought. my only regret is that there was no proper secret criminal mastermind hide out. you need to have that in a bond movie! and what the hell was all that poker about?!? they played cards for maybe 40 minutes!

The Casino Royale movie is way different from the othe rbonds because they for a change wanted to make a serious bond movie instead of just another funny movie that has something to do with good-looking women, bad guys and an agent who is always lucky. I personally liked the parts where they played cards, but that's only my opinion. I can imagine people who'll hate those parts.
Have you seen Donnie Darko by the way? Nice atmosphere!

Also the black and white start seemed to give a darker, more serious tone to the film, but was followed almost immediately by a over-the-top chase that includes a "let's climb a crane so we can fight on the top" part. The director is clearly trying to do both serious/raw and outlandish/excessive at the same time, clearly trying to please both types of Bond fans, which obviously means that there is no continuity or coherence.
No, not a good film by a long shot. The only positive thing was that the previous Bond was even more dreadful.

Originally posted by rbmorrisI was just interested if someone had seen it and what they thought about it. The Norwegian review I linked to was quite informative, and the film club had some information as well, so I think I have enough information to decide whether to go and see it or not (actually the deciding factor will probably be my level of fatigue).
That was the best I could do. Haven't seen it myself. Might be some reviews on amazon.com.
Originally posted by PalynkaI do absolutely not agree with that. I think he acted fine, much much better than the last four bonds and yes, the guys who wrote the scenario made some choices that were not so good, but over all I think it was a good movie.

The whole wanting to quit the secret service because he didn't want to kill anymore, and then deciding to stay because the girl betrayed or not completely, but partly, and then died - thing was a relief compared to any other bond movie. Only Connery was a better actor, at least in those days, but the older movies are not better than this one. Maybe I should try to make a +/- list.
+:
Really nice start
Character building for Bond
Good variety in action scenes (it's still an action movie)
Lots of plot twists that were hard to predict
More serious movie than other Bonds
Decent cast, especially Craig, Mikkelson and Dench
Great film music
(for me personally) Nice poker scenes
(over all) Decent start for a series of movies
-:
Action scene on crane very unrealistic (and some others were not really realistic as well)
Love scene after revalidation not realistic (and unnecessary)
Balance between old and new Bond-movie style unclear
Not enough room for acting for Mikkelson and occasionally Craig
I'd rate it a four star movie. π
