gaming vs good video specs is almost interchangeable. but yeah, i7 cpu, ddr3 ram and a motherboard to go with it, plus a decent 'gaming' graphics card is what you want to be looking for.
cost? depends. things to cut the cost down with marginal power decrease:
-don't get the fastest i7, look for the lower clocked ones. the real difference is whether yo ...[text shortened]... have better things to do than tinker with hardware.
I guess that's about it?

you're gonna hate the i5, but not triple-channel vs dual channel, or ddr2 vs ddr3.
6gb vs 12gb you're gonna hate the second you have your torrent downloads filling up the ram and you wanna open a big chess database. but you can make do with 6gb easily as well, it's not a big problem.

I'm only half kidding. The iPad truly is awesome for occasional internet browsing, managing/viewing photos and most of non-gaming, non-professional stuff. You can link it up to your TV as well, but I think the cable is not HD.
OK, I checked out the Dell site again to get a rough estimate on the price. Here's what I found in my price range:
Dell Studio XPS 9000 ($999):
- Intel Core i7 920, 2.66GHz, 1MHz FSB, 8MB cache
- Windows 7 64-bit
- 6GB tri-channel DDR3 SDRAM, 1066MHz, 6 DIMMS
- 1 TB hard drive
- ATI HD5450 Radeon video card
- 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
Dell Studio XPS 9000 ($1199):
- Intel Core i7 920, 2.66GHz, 1MHz FSB, 8MB cache
- Windows 7 64-bit
- 9GB DDR3 SDRAM, 1066MHz, 6 DIMMS (doesn't specify dual-channel or tri-channel)
- 1 TB hard drive
- NVIDIA GT220 GeForce video card
- Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
Dell Studio XPS 8100 ($999):
- Intel Core i7 860, 2.8GHz, 1MHz FSB, 8MB cache
- Windows 7 64-bit
- 8GB dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM, 1333MHz, 4 DIMMS
- 1 TB hard drive
- NVIDIA GT220 GeForce video card
- Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
Originally posted by wormwoodI agree it's expensive, and it's just a toy. But I think that's going to change soon. There was a lot of uncertainty if this was going to be a flop or not. Now it seems it isn't and there is a market for it, I think many companies will provide competing products.

Originally posted by PalynkaI was considering getting a Mac Mini, as it's portable and can fill the role of a media centre PC, but it's too dang expensive for what you get. I also already have a MacBook Pro I got for cheap on craigslist, so if the need for extreme smugness arises I can just use that.

Originally posted by PBE6first I thought it seemed quite pricey, as I got a similar set up with the same price 1½ years ago. then I realized it's in dollars not euros. 😛

still, maybe still a bit pricey? but the setups look roughly okay to me (provided the graphics cards have the connections you need).
Originally posted by PBE6I think Macs are really overpriced, I would never buy one. Same for iPods. I mean, there's tons of alternatives that do the same stuff for less. For the iPad not so much (as it's all about the interface and portability).

I do feel a bit dirty for praising something that comes from Apple. 😳
Originally posted by PBE6to be frank, I thought of a mac mini as well, but there was mitigating factors... 🙂

(I was going to use it as a sort of light weight server, no keybs, no monitors, just a tiny box humming a the edge of my desk...)
