Kirstie Alley, 71 years old.
Strange to learn recently for the first time that when she was screening for that role, there was an accident that killed her mother and left her father in the hospital, and that the director (Nicholas Meyers) said that he would wait until the situation with her father had improved. That was a kind thing to do and a great gift to all who subsequently got to enjoy her work.
This might seem disrespectful to some, but the day before I heard the news, I was thinking (not for the first time) about the Bible story about the woman with the alabaster jar, and how Kirstie Alley might have played that role.
