Dozens of couples have gathered in Times Square, New York City, to re-enact a famous kiss that celebrated the end of the Second World War. That kiss between a sailor and nurse was captured in one of the most iconic photographs in American history. The couples kissing on Friday were marking the 70th anniversary VJ Day- the day Japan surrendered to the United States. A 25-foot sculpture depicting Alfred Eisenstaedt's photograph of the sailor kissing the white-uniformed nurse towered over the commemoration. After a countdown ("five, four, three, two, one, smooch!" ) the couples locked lips in their best imitation of the photograph. Ray and Ellie Williams of Georgia kicked off the re-enactment of the kiss from August 14, 1945.
The iconic impromptu moment (US Navy) The Williamses are Navy veterans. They married the day after V-J Day. Ray Williams said he and his wife are "deeply honoured and privileged" to represent their generation at the Times Square commemoration. Mr Williams said he remembered jubilation breaking out on V-J Day all over the country, including in Gainesville, Georgia, where he and his bride-to-be were stationed. "We were doubly excited about celebrating the end of the war and also our marriage," he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11804509/Couples-gather-in-Times-Square-to-re-enact-iconic-V-J-Day-kiss.html

Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands (which planned to continue ruling it with the Japanese having surrendered and with the war in Europe over) and so created the Republic of Indonesia. Interestingly, the British Army - which had technically speaking occupied Indonesia at the USA's behest - did not become aware of the declaration of independence until about a month later.
On August 17,
"1942 Marine Raiders attack Makin Island in the Gilbert Islands from two submarines.
1943 Allied forces complete the conquest of Sicily.
1944 The mayor of Paris, Pierre Charles Tattinger, meets with the German commander Dietrich von Choltitz to protest the explosives being deployed throughout the city.
1945 Upon hearing confirmation that Japan has surrendered, Sukarno proclaims Indonesia’s independence."
