'The hardest day' in the Battle of Britain. The Luftwaffe flew 850 sorties in one day losing 69 aircraft whilst the RAF lost 68 prompting Churchill to say those now famous words, 'Never in the history of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few'.
I salute 'the few'

Accompanied by one of their grandmothers, my two sons visited both of their living great grandmothers (one of whom is still alive in 2015) in the same day and later talked to their other grandmother on the phone. Their other two great grandmothers died in 1955 and 1980 respectively.

Indonesia declared its independence from the Netherlands (which planned to continue ruling it with the Japanese having surrendered and with the war in Europe over) and so created the Republic of Indonesia. Interestingly, the British Army - which had technically speaking occupied Indonesia at the USA's behest - did not become aware of the declaration of independence until about a month later.
Five days into its post-colonial era and it is still not widely known for sure in Indonesia that the new nation had already declared its independence. It will still be another 25 or so days before the 'occupying' authority ~ the British Army ~ will become aware of the Proclamation made by President Soekarno at his home in Jakarta on the 17th August

Originally posted by phil3000My spouse tells me there was another more recent occasion (in 2010) when my two sons visited both of their living great grandmothers in the same day, so the immediacy and significance of my previous post on the matter is lessened somewhat. I appreciate the three emoticons of reverential people shouting "Encore! Encore! Encore!" phil3000, but I can't really top my 20th August 2009 story.

25th August 2014
I probably awoke at about 05.30 as usual. It was a Monday in late August, so I had to work. I can't remember really. I could look at my e-mail InBox and Sent Box to see what may have been going on that day. If a lectured [I think I may have done or did the semester start on 1st September?], I could probably dig out what material I used and get a list of who attended. But essentially I have forgotten that particular Monday. This is in stark contrast to the impression that innumerable TV shows give ~ especially cop shows ~ which, with the aid of probing questions, flashbacks, and CCTV and forensics, pretty much any day or incident can be pieced together and recalled in dramatic and plot-hinging detail. Real life is almost never like that. Many, many days come and go and are for all intents and purposes forgotten. It would seem 25th August 2014 was, for me anyway, one of those.
