My mother used to say about children in general and my kids in particular: "They will be fine as long as they don't turn criminal." And I agree and feel the same for my grandchildren (I think they are safe now πŸ™‚ ), and my sweet great-granddaughter.

As Astrid Lindgren, the author of Pippi Longstocking, said: Give the children love and more love, and the common sense will come by itself.
I thnk that is probably good advice for your part of the world where there is a generous safety net and even people who do nothing can still enjoy a decent standard of living. Most parts of the world lazy people will live in abject poverty if they do not work and there are no state benefits for them.

This is my blendπŸ™‚, I always enjoyed working inside or out on different things or more than one job hustling side money. When I get really down after something major it takes some time with depression. Interest can totally sidetrack things if something pops up but I score higher than full autism on that scale. The one and main thing is he needs pushed hard and not let up, ...[text shortened]... ns in the other direction. He needs to be set up for success in the right ways and maybe some help.
Indeed .. good parenting should always produce well-adjusted productive adults. If a child is still in your house and dependent on you after 21 then you have failed as a parent.

What makes you think people here live a comfortable life without having to work?
And where do you live?

Some of us who have retired are doing better than many people in the World.

Yes, but that is a bit beside the point I think.

Actually you asked the question. I just gave my point of View from my own personal experience with not working and still living a good life. πŸ˜‰

If we had not done our share of work, but simply been lazy as rajk999 suggested people do, we would not be in this situation now, would we?

Without asking for specific personal details, in general terms how is it you have done so well in life to be doing better in retirement than some who are working?

I am not about to call anyone lazy not knowing their true situation. I believe I've earned everything I have because of my hard work and wise investments over the years. I wish I had bought that damn gold at 50.00 an ounce as my brother-in-law had suggested to me. Oh well to late to cry over spilled milk. πŸ™‚

I did not use the word 'comfortable'. I said they can enjoy a decent standard of living. Decent where im from is food, shelter and chothes. I dont need to prove that, as its all over the internet. Google it. Some people live off social security in welfare states. Its not hard to do. Where Im from is irrelevant but you can check my flag. We dont have welfare here. We need to work or starve.

I think one way is to save and invest, and live smart. Some people pile up expenses while they work [like many kids, many girlfriends, divorce after divorce, active and expensive social life, designer taste in clothes etc] so they have very little ability to save. The smart ones save, live frugally, retire early, invest and start a business. Its not hard.

It is hard, what you meant to write was that it's not so complicated.

Anyway saving isn't the best option, inflation will reduce the value of savings over time.

I’m aware of what the various possibilities are; I was asking Very Rusty what he has done himself to be in that privileged position.

I meant to say its not hard. Its not complicated either. Society has created a bunch of lame, greedy, celebrity-worshipping shallow people who are not interested in their future. Also saving is a thousand times more productive than spending on stupid useless garbage, despite the fall in value due to inflation.
