so you think that they should get life just for attempting to have underage sex?
Again, I have zero sympathy for an adult who preys on children.
I'm not sure why you say "just for attempting" as if that somehow mitigates their guilt. Their intent is clearly established, so they should be treated just as if they'd done it.

Originally posted by geniusThe main reason I want 'em in jail is to prevent further molestation. Punishment is a secondary concern. However, we need a proven method of rehabilitation before we let them out. Err on the safe side, so that the pedo doesn't claim any more victims once they're out.

I can picture it now...
"you cured?"
Yes.
"Do you find this child sexy"?
No.
"Ok, glad we could help".
Perv heads straight to the playground.

in short, we can never be sure if someone is trully rehabilitated. ever. it rests meerly on someones opinion. but what have we come to as a society when we lock everyone up "just in case"?
i do, on the whole, agree with you though (my initial problem was with the "throw away the key" people earlier). i think, however, that locking them up for 20 year because they once attempted to molest a child is a bit far. i think that the sex offenders register is a great idea (and better than locking them up-this way they have a life, and know compassion), and a lot of the other measures put in place, in scotland anyway, are good.
on a differnt note, i think letting the public have access to the sex offenders register is the stupidest think in the world though. since when did the public know best?!?
meh...

Have you ever watched this show? Some of the people already work with children, some of them have strange things like teddy bears and duct-tape in their cars.
If they HAD been talking with a real child, who knows what would have happened. The only reason this turned into an attempt, as you put it... is because someone was watching out for children that can't look out for themselves.
Throw the key away.

Originally posted by PhlabibitI know. So the ideas of some, to mutilate them or kill them or whatever with them, is not the answer. All cases of any crime have to be judged on the individual events surrounding it, that's why sex offenders are generally let out of prison on licence and have to register at their local police station and are watched. (Please note the use of the word 'generally'😉

I just don't go with the idea of capital punishment and the mutilation that seems to be the order of the day whenever this issue is raised in the forums.
I do wonder if the people who ask for the criminal to be hung, drawn and quartered want to go and watch, or would they be satisfied in just being told that it had happened. Maybe they would like to go back to the days of going to watch a hanging instead of a football match!
Yes, it is a tough call. 🙂
EDIT: And I'm not getting uptight or arguing with anyone in here cos most people on this site are nice people 😀
