sonhouse are you trolling or what? You cannot install more than one antivirus at the same time. If you have say Norton and want to install Kaspersky, Kaspersky will not install because the system could crash. Its not quantity, its quality.

I wish there was a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Computers so we could report Sonhouse and have his poor pc confiscated.

So far the list of egregious offences I have noted in just this thread are:

1) Clicking on a link from a random person on Facebook
2) Installing multiple antivirus programs
3) Installing multiple antivirus programs and then complaining that his computer is slow
4) Taking advice from zeeblebot
5) Actually paying money for a Linux distro

You could add a lot more things to the list if you go looking in his other "computer" threads.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go continue with not having a virus since 1991 and not having an antivirus program installed on any of my Windows computers since about 1992.

Being a complete computer numptie I decided that I actually needed an AV and after a quick but exceedingly mind-numbingly tedious read through a few reviews, I bought and installed Norton which is easy to use and seems to have coped well with the onslaught of the 2 "potential threats" I've had all year. Cost me about a £1 a week and allows me to have plenty of time for other things in life too!

An antivirus is a must have if you want to use the internet, receive files, check emails, visit forums. Many a time my AV has warned me that the link on a forum or in a url contains malicious files and blocks it.

I mentioned forums, many of us visit forums with the popular VB software and there was a recent exploit that enabled bad guys to booby trap forums. As you may trust the forum you visit, all you have to do is visit and get infected by a drive-by-download.

If someone claims they have no antivirus installed, but use the internet, receive emails, visit forums then I would call them a liar if they claim they have zero issues.

Do I need to install some kind of security if I visit the Debates forum?

I used Trend Micro and I know you can't do more than one of the major variety, they won't allow multiple installs, I am talking about the side issue ones like superantispyware, or malwarebytes which usually can live side by side with the majors.
BTW, my original post only asked one question and that was if I ran an AV in safe mode and it says I need to reboot to complete the kill, is it better to reboot back to safe mode or reboot normally. Why this turned into a flame session I don't know. Does anyone have an answer to my original question?

I have no antivirus installed, use the internet regularly, use a web based email service, visit forums, download torrents constantly, and I have had no security/virus issues since around 1991 when I copied Space Quest 3 on some floppies from a friend who had a virus.

If that doesn't fry your brain enough: I have Windows Update turned off too.

And I have never received a single spam email to my primary email account since it was created roughly 5 years ago.

It's called "knowing how to internet".

Thanks for that. Is there something about rebooting into safe mode that stops the completion action from taking place? Not worried about it or anything, just curious. I found out about a local Linux users group meeting happening in a couple of hours! Will be going to that to learn more about linux. I think that is the way to go if you have a family machine. I have 5 comps here, a lap and 4 desktops, one for recording music, it never goes on the net except for XP upgrades and such, a comp for amateur radio (my call AI3N) a comp for my wife for graphics mainly, and a family machine used by all members of the family, those last two are connected together with a data switch, hit scroll lock twice and it switches between family machine and graphics machine. That way when the family box gets screwed, I still have a backup comp. I also have backup HD to revert to but added programs that I wanted to save on the newer HD so am trying to get the newer one back online so I can clone it as the new backup drive but didn't get far enough on that before the shyte hit the fan with trojans and such which is what started all this bs on this forum. I never have problems with any of the other comps but the family machine because the others don't go to crapware sites. Some assshole went to several porn sites on the family machine, I found out belatedly, some friend of one of my kids and have been having difficulties ever since. I caused one problem myself not knowing about Koobface and social sites, saw an email saying someone wanted to be friends on facebook and foolishly linked to it, big mistake. So that's the story here on computers at my house.
I only use one major AV, trend micro but a couple of minor ones that TM allows to load and they come up with junk TM doesn't. Which is my point about using more than one AV.

Its called "knowing how to set yourself up to be mugged on the inter-webz". Looking at my AV report I can see a blocked Trojan program Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen just from surfing normal everyday sites.

You think that not having an antivirus and not updating your computer is going to keep you safe? How? Do you leave your doors and windows open when you go out of your house even if there is nothing worth stealing?

I just downloaded malwarebytes because trev33 wanted someone to test the link, so I thought I might as well run a FULL SCAN:

Who uses Internet Explorer? I use Firefox with the latest addons, which you are unlikely to be unaware of given your knowledge on computer security is pre-1990. We are not all ignorant old dudes who use un-patched computers or surf the webs without antivirus, even a child can see that is wrong.

You might not be clever enough to know the implications of using Safari or Firefox with scripting enabled. What is the difference in all these :-

- trojan
- rootkit
- virus
- worm

Just because you are some old dude, do you think ignorance is a defence on the internet?

Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen really only works on IE, but you would know that if you looked it up.

If you're using FF then your AV is working very valiantly to protect you from a 2006 trojan than can't affect you. This being your example for your justification for everyone having a mandatory antivirus system is quite the oversight on your part.

If you're struggling with terminology like trojan, rootkit, virus, and worm, then I recommend that you use google. Let me know how many security alerts you get while looking these words up.

Finally, "do you think ignorance is a defence on the internet". No, on the contrary, scroll up, read my previous posts - as stated I think knowledge is the best defence, not ignorantly installing unnecessary antivirus programs to soothe your paranoia.

That being said, I wouldn't recommend to, well, anyone I know that they shouldn't install an antivirus. However I can personally choose not to install one on my own computers and remain unaffected by browsing smartly, something that most people seem to be incapable of doing, considering the number of computers I've been asked to fix.

Good luck with your assumptions.

Browsing smartly or not, not using AV is like making love with strangers without a condom.

I get it. You are using a pirated version of windows xp that's why you cannot get windows updates. FYI the trojan (along with the zeus rootkit) was on a V-Bulletin forum compromised a few weeks ago.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT AN IFRAME IS? DUMBASSES WITHOUT AN ANTIVIRUS WHO SURF USING FIREFOX/SAFARI/CHROME WHO VISIT THIS FORUM ARE INFECTED. DON'T LET NOBODY FOOL YOU!!!!

Jeez, I didn't know people are this computer-illiterate.
