Thanks for your vote. 🙂 Just to remind people, you aren't really supposed to say which picture is yours before the voting is over....
WOOP! Sorry. I didn't even think about that. I apologize. Too bad there's not a way to go edit my post.
Anyway, thanks for running the "contest". I like seeing all these good photos.
About 'War's Leftovers':
I love how "down" it is. Most things in the picture convey or exude a down attitude. The flag's as down as it can be: it's not alive and flying; it's just hanging there, lifeless, like the guy in the plaid shirt under it. What's he doing? Nothing. Nothing is the point. He's already done his duty. And the guy in the forefront...wow. That's a statement for the whole photo. He really sets the tone, and it's highlighted and complimented by the person behind him bent forward/down in the dark outfit. The lady's face sags and her head is bent down with apathy. The guy with the half-covered face says a lot, too. His posture, well, lack of, for one thing. And the covered eye is a metaphor which speaks volumes on its own. I love the use of high contrast black and white, too. ART. Congratulations, whomever. That is an amazing photo, in my opinion. Other comments on this pic, excuse me, work of art?

I had a very tough time deciding why I liked Coming Home more than War's Leftovers. I think I finally pinned it down to the utter simplicity of the shot, and how I was able to seemingly grasp immediately the feelings and emotions conveyed by the subject. War's Leftover's is an extremely complex picture that you get more and more out of the longer you look. Really, I went with my initial gut reaction for these first two shots and nothing else.

It may have looked like it would never happen, but here it is - the 9th round of the RHP Photography Competition, "People"! We'll try a slightly different procedure in this round, so please read all the instructions.

"Coming Home" was a clear winner for me. Great piece of work. Well done to the photographer.

"War's Leftovers" was a clear winner for me. It's a picture which "speaks". Unlike "Fold Your Arms In Protest", which didn't give much meaning to me before I had read what it was about, "War's Leftovers" doesn't need an explanation.
I was in doubt whether I should include "Sit In Line" in my list, because as the photographer states, it's debatable whether it fits the subject. I decided it was an interesting and creative interpretation of the subject and therefore included it, although I might have placed it higher if I hadn't considered the subject at all. Two other pictures which I felt only partly fit the subject are "Cao Daoism" and "Day Out", especially the latter, which would otherwise have been included in my list. "Puppy Love" would probably have been in my list if it had natural colours. The distorted colours really destroyed the picture for me. Of course that's a matter of taste.

Fold your arms in protest reminds me of early eighties photojournalism, which is the main reason I like it this much. That's also the reason I don' t mind the grain. I agree with the photographer that the sleeve on the left is disturbing and it's a pity you can't crop it out. But the determined look on the face of the people on the left make up for it. I also appreciate it's a scan of a home made print. Nice job on dodging the background.
Coming home is excellent, and if I could have selected two number ones, this would be the other one.
Cao Daism is a very busy, very confusing picture and the reflections of the windows are just too much for me., I think it would be a better picture without them. But there's not much you can do about that, and the composition is pretty interesting. I don't know about the people being in the middle, but the picture has strong lines in it.
War leftover's is of course an interesting image with many qualities, and I realise I use strict standards when I give it relatively little points. But there's too much that I don't really like about it. The burned highlights and artifacts in the upper half of the picture and the yellowish tint take a lot away from it. Also, the figure on the right is more disturbing to me than the sleeve in 'fold your arms'. And I'm not sure I would have seen this as veterans if it were not for the title. On the other hand, the three people on the right are very powerful, especially the man looking in the camera. And the presence of the flag, in combination with the title, sends a powerful message. But the main feeling it leaves me with, is that it could have been an even better picture.
Just Chillin and puppy love are two pictures which would have scored higher if they hadn't been manipulated in the way they have been. I agree with Nordlys on the colors of Puppy Love (and also what she says about this being a matter of taste). And while I think it's a good idea to blur the background in Just Chillin, I think a more natural kind of blur would have been better.
But, as always, pretty much every picture in this list has it's merits. Good job, everyone. Also, I would like to say I think it's a good idea to discuss the pictures while the vote is still open. I didn't have time to write this message sooner, but it has been interestin to read all comments, which made me look at every picture more often than before.
