It won't come as a surprise to anyone which picture won this round, 50 points ahead of the rest of the field. I am glad I persuaded kirksey to participate in the competition. Congratulations, Kirk! And another new participant came in second - well done, magnublm!

Here is a little background on the picture. It was taken at a VA (Veterans Administration) hospital when I was in college. I would go there on Sundays for visitation and worship services. At the time I very much enjoyed black and white photography and wish I still did it. This experience at this hospital was my first formative experience doing hospital ministry. It was not an easy experience. As a naive visitor I walked up to an old man and asked how he was doing. He responded, "What the hell do you care?" That was a pretty good question.

Originally posted by kirksey957Well done Kirk. I don't agree with the people that said the harsh lighting spoiled the pic. I thought it added overall to the grittiness of the pic.

Re my pics: Hong Kong Mafia was taken in Angkhor Wat, Cambodia. The boys grabbed our shades, and suddenly they started saying how they were the "Hong Kong Mafia"
Cao Daism is a pic I entered just for fun, mainly because of the bright colours of the people, which fit in well with the temple which was incredibly ornate and colourful.
Wedding Day Blues won me €500 in an Irish national paper photography competition. I really like it. I couldn't believe it when he just kept staring at me like that long enough to realise that it would be a good pic, take my camera out of my pocket, turn it on and take the pic.
Thanks to Noodles for running the comp more smoothly than I could ever achieve. 🙂

Hong Kong Mafia was one of the pictures which did quite well, but which I personally didn't find interesting at all. I think I must be missing something there. I would be quite interested to hear what others see in it.
BTW, I just noticed that the Norwegian word for "spreadsheet" has exactly the same consonants as "Ragnorak", so if you continue to call me Noodles, I think I'll call you Regneark from now on. 😉
Originally posted by NordlysCongrats to Kirksey. Thanks to all who voted for the protest pic - I got loads of pics that day this one being my fave. Noodles(!) 😉 - I was confused about your comment that it wasn't clear what this was about - there is a banner in the background stating 'No war on Iraq'.
Duck - although I don't quite agree, thinking of the previous round...

HK Mafia for me shows the playful innocence of childhood vs the sinister message of the gun pointed at the kids own head. Although it is clearly posed, it is a very spontaneous picture... that reads back a bit bullsh!tty but I hope makes some sense.
Although the message from Wars Leftovers is very clear I still think that in terms of photographic 'rules' the harshness of the background takes something away from it as a picture- I am drawn back to the lack of definition between the pale shirt and the white of the background where that guy is bending over. If burn't out a bit in the darkroom detail like this could make a good photo into a great photo.
If another round is more suitable for Sit In Line I will enter it again as I'd like to see how it stands up where there is no uncertainty over it's suitability for the round. It is a cool sculpture and I think I captured it as well as I could given it was in a very dark cellar.
Originally posted by rhbRHP 😉 - Well, it's pretty clear that it's a demonstration, but without reading the title, I didn't see the relevance of the arm-folding (it just looked like if they were waiting for something, or maybe being a bit cold), and the picture didn't convey much emotion to me. But that may be because I am pretty bad at reading body language. Is folding your arms a common way to express protest?

Thanks for your thoughts about Hong Kong Mafia, that makes sense.

The next round is "Urban". I'll announce it in a new thread soon. I should have done that in the middle of this round, then we could have finished the round before Christmas. Now I think it's too late anyway, so I am not much in a hurry. I might still open the round for voting before Christmas, but most likely I won't.

I was in Rome at the weekend, and thought of a new round. "History" could be an interesting round, which could be open to some interpretation. I obviously thought of it, due to all the historical buildings in Rome, but I don't think it would be restricted to pics of historical buildings. What do ye think?
