The conscious decision is whether or not to remain ignorant of a particular matter once you know of your ignorance. But you'll always remain ignorant of many many other matters.
If it turns out I am ignorant on a subject, I'm glad to look it up and see where I'm wrong (if at all). Nothing is worse than someone who's ignorant talking about a subject and being too thickheaded to verify the stuff they spout.

Actually, survival of the fittest does not necessarily benefit the intelligence scale. It benefits those who reproduce more. Studies have shown that people with a lower IQ tend to have more kids than people with a higher IQ.
