Russ tried the nice way, and it didn't work. Now we try it the tough way. Their is no great solution, but it's a lot better than doing nothing at all.

This is basically my point exactly.
The game mods do not know what they are doing.
They're implimenting a system with which they hope to use fear to keep people in check.
Doesn't work. Never has, never will.
i mean, i'm against using engines- hell, i don't even use databases (too lazy)- but i'm here for a challenge, so if someone is using a computer against me, then fine, what do i care? it's going to give me one helluva game, which i want.
i agree that this could get out of control. people seem to be beating the witch-hunt drums, and i find that more concerning than chess cheaters.

If you want to play an engine, you can save 30-50 bucks and buy one or you can download many for free on the net.
Originally posted by fierytormentWhy not?? Are you saying that NO ONE who has any understanding of chess would possibly cheat? Absurd. To me his analysis in that game was strongly indicative that he was a cheat, since he resigned in a position not even a Grandmaster would have on the basis that a series of moves potentially to be made by his opponent would have given that opponent a sizable advantage, but no forced win. Real players make the opponent make good moves, not resign on the possibility that they will.
so since 2 players in the top ten were found to be cheating, are we investigating the top 50? the top 100?
I read the IronMan analysis too, and Akizy called his analysis excellent. I'm not so sure a cheater could give detailed analysis of his moves like Ironman did.

Sustained.

Ironically, I couldn't agree more.
Are you afraid? The only thing I could be afraid of is being accused and booted (because I know I don't use engines)
I don't think it's too likely that's going to happen though because I think that the last thing Russ wants is to boot legit customers, ie have a real witch-hunt, bad for business ...
So, who is afraid? If somebody is an engine user, seeing some other user get the boot just might wake them up out of their "I'm Tal the Terrible" fantasy and make them play as themselves.
I'm not saying that everyone that has knowledge of chess won't cheat, but I disagree with you on this fact. On Akizy's level, a sizeable advantage is game over for the most part. He's not going to make a obvious mistake, and I think Ironman realized he made a mistake. Whether he was cheating or not........ I'm skeptical
